Help: Problems after transfering files to new build

Hi everyone,

Just built a computer for the first time and it went fairly smooth until I set up a home network to transfer files from my old comp. I used a crossover cable and despite the fact that both computers said the connection had "little to no connectivity" I was still able to share files.

Anyway, after I was done I unhooked the crossover cable and plugged my ethernet cable in to my new computer to use the internet and for the first couple minutes it was ok and I was online. But then, after a few minutes it looses all connection to the internet but I don't get any error messages or any "Little to no connectivity" messages. I tried shutting the computer down and it does the same thing-- when it boots back up I'm able to use the internet for a few minutes before it stops working.

I'm completely baffeled if anyone can give any clue as to the cause/solution of this I'd appreciate it.

If you haven't done so, recycle the modem and router if you use one. Turn of the computer and unplug the modem and router. Wait about 3 or 4 minutes and then plug the modem in and wait another couple of minutes and plug in the router waiting a few minutes and then restrat the computer. If your using a router, see if there is any newer firmware. If that doesn't work call you ISP support, at least the support for my ISP is really good. Could be your modem is dying

Its called power cycle the modem and router.

With a crossover cable and no DHCP server, Windows will fall back to automatic private IP addressing. This is why you can still transfer files even though it says limited or no connectivity.

As far as your Internet problems... can you give some more information as to how you connect to the Internet such as what type of ISP, whether you have a switch/router, etc.

Next time you have the problem, open up a DOS prompt and try:
[code:1:50325dadc5]ping 64.233.161.147[/code:1:50325dadc5]

That will send a ping to Google. If it comes back with a reply, then it's probably a software issue on your PC. If not, then probably a network issue.
