I have come to my wits end with this. We have a new server (windows
2003) that we're trying to add to our Windows 2000 domain. I have
tried, with DCPROMO, to join the server to the domain. It says I have
to run ADPREP /ForestPrep first. I tried that. It failed (on the 2003
server) so I ran this on the 2000 DC. Now it says there are files
missing (I found the SCHEMA.INI listed in the log file but there are 3
other files that do not exist on the 2000 server.)

What am I missing here? Should it BE this hard to join a 2003 server?
Eventually I want to demote the older DC to be a BDC and a VPN server
and let this 2003 box take over as the DC.

Any help is appreciates!

Yes you must run the Adprep /forestprep and the Adprep /domainprep using the
Windows Server 2003 CD.

For details, see here.

Fran, there are many possible problems here. First of all, do you currently
have multiple domain controllers in your domain -OR- is this domain part of
a forest that has more than one domain. ADPREP/forestprep has to be run on
the DC that is the Schema Master. This seems like it is the problem in your
case if it is missing the schema.ini file. You can use ntdsutil to find out
which of your domain controllers is the Schema master.

In addition, make sure you are logged on as a user that can do a forest
prep. The user must be a member of the Enterprise Admins group AND the
Schema Admins group (so regular Domain admin won't cut it).

Also (and this probably isn't the problem but it doesn't hurt to say) make
sure all of the current DCs in the entire forest (if you have more than one
domain) are at Service Pack 2 or greater.

Hope this helps

Alan,

Thanks for the fast reply! This is a single domain network right now.
I'm trying to introduce the second DC (there is only one server on
this network as well.) so the setup (I thought, anyway) should be
fairly simple. I've managed MANY Windows 2000 domains but this is my
first attempt on adding a second server (DC) where the primary domain
controllers are running windows 2000 and the NEW server is running
windows 2003.

I'll look at the link posted by Denis Wong, too and see if there's
something I missed. I copied the AdPrep.exe from the windows 2003 cd
but apparently there are files that I must have missed.

Fran,

Simply drop in the Windows Server 2003 CD-Media on the Domain Controller
that holds the FSMO Role of Schema Master and make sure that you are logged
on with an account that is a member of the Schema Admins group. In your
case - as you have only one Server / Domain Controller - log on with the
Administrator account ( assuming that you have not renamed it or removed it
from the 'default' Security Groups ) and then navigate to adprep on the WIN
Server 2003 CD. Run /forestprep first. Then log on to the DC that holds
the FSMO Role of PDC Emulator with a user account that is a member of the
Domain Admins group ( in this case it is the same DC as you have only one
DC ) and then run /domainprep.

If you do not do this you will not be able to add the WIN2003 Domain
Controller. There is really nothing to talk about. Not trying to be
rude! -😉

This brings the Schema up to something that WIN2003 knows how to use ( to
put it very 'untechnical' ). In WIN2000 if you look on the CD Media it goes
upto xxx13.ldf but with WIN2003 I believe that it goes up to
xxx30.ldf.......

Cary

Well, the key was the CD. I ran the ADprep from the 2003 cd and all
went just fine.

Thanks to all for your assistance with this!

A lot of people worry about this -mainly because of the no-going back
disclaimers, etc. As you've just found out, it's really not that bad ;-)
