I no longer see the Safely Remove icon in my Notification Tray. Normally it
automatically appeared and would show my DVD drive (swaps w/ floppy drive),
Ethernet PC Card and my USB Jumpdrive ... since my system has USB v1.1 I've
been told it's important to use this feature whenever I need to remove any of
these devices. How do I get it to re-appear?

Open control-panel,start/task bar,task-bar,customize,locate the icon,set
to always appear.

Tried your suggestion but without any success ... the Safely Remove icon was
listed under "Past Items." Also tried the "Restore Defaults" button but saw
no changes ... any more suggestions?
