[SOLVED] HELP!! Windows 10 Wi-Fi Hotspot repeatedly switching ON and OFF

I think I am beginning to lose my sanity!😕

I have configured the Windows 10 "Hotspot" on an HP laptop and it appears to switch ON with the blue button indicator - but only for a few seconds or a minute then it switches OFF, then ON, then OFF again repeatedly.

I can't see anything obvious in Event Viewer that might give me a clue🤔

I've been all over the network settings, preventing powering down if not in use etc. and tried 3 different drivers for the Broadcom BCM43142 802.11 bgn Wi-Fi Adapter and confirmed all the required services are running

• Application Layer Gateway Service
• Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
• Network Connections
• Network Location Awareness (NLA)
• Telephony
• Remote Access Connection Manager
• Remote Access Auto Connection Manager
• Windows Firewall

Any suggestions as to the cause of this would be much appreciated.

When you say "hotspot" are you just talking about "wifi"? You're simply trying to turn on wifi to connect to the internet?

If you have tried the correct drivers, then it's most likely a physical issue. I've seen wifi adapter burn out and die, and this is their typical behavior. They work for a while, then shut off, then turn back on etc..... The problem gets worse and worse, and the time until it turns off again shortens. Eventually it completely dies and can't turn on wifi at all.

Wifi cards are cheap(<$20). You just need to make sure your laptop is the type with a replaceable wifi card. Then you need to make sure you buy the matching card form factor and it should plug right in.

Thanks gggplaya for you reply & observations - I'll consider a replacement Wi-Fi card next time I visit but, unfortunately, the laptop is 400 miles away 😥& I use TeamViewer to manage it (HP Pavilion Notebook -15-p246sa (ENERGY STAR) ProdID L2W56EA#ABU)

The Wi-Fi connection works reliably, the issue is with trying to share the internet connection using the Windows 10 inbuilt "Mobile Hotspot" to which I want to connect two Wi-Fi enabled cameras and use NetCamStudio to monitor and record activity.

The default "Mobile Hotspot" host IP is 192.168.137.1 and the cameras use IP addresses 192.168.137.XXX and they can connect ..... intermittently but almost a soon as they do establish a connection, the "Mobile Hotspot" turns OFF then ON again repeatedly. It was working OK at one time but I suspect an update may have broken it and my attempts to fix it remotely only made matters worse.😥

Anyway, I may have found the culprit in the Event Viewer but not sure why it keeps stopping and starting

Any ideas from your or anyone else would be welcome

Seems to be the dreaded autoconfig garbage again. Microsoft seems to be massive idiots that they can't fix this, it has caused all kinds of strange issues for years. Most time you see people complaining about short drops or ping spikes every couple seconds. In those cases some people say disabling autoconfig. In this case I suspect
you might need it.

You are also doing something that tends to cause lots of problems. I didn't know you could use just windows as hotspot software used to be you had to load a third party program. This likely still uses the ICS garbage or some variation. This too has lots of bugs.

Do you have any other option to not use the PC as a router to share the connection. Is there any way you could use a actual router or AP to connect to the cameras and use lan network via ethernet to talk to the cameras. If you are using the pc for this dedicated purpose could you convert it to linux rather than use windows.
Maybe it would be more stable.

I haven't tried stopping WLAN AutoConfig but, hey ho, that's worth a try but, as you say, it's probably an essential component required to run the Windows 10 "HotSpot"
I'll let you know..... (update.... unfortunately not 😥 my sister on the way to restart it 😂)

I was using a dedicated router before, as you suggested, but there were occasionally issues that my sister was unable to resolve and required my physical presence hence my attempt to simplify the set up but using the Windows 10 "HotSpot"

As for Linux, no doubt it would be more stable but, at 70 with my entire history with MS DOS and every iteration of Windows, I' don't have time for the learning curve.🤣
