I've been capturing and creating some movies and would really like the
ability to combine 2 of the movies onto 1 screen for a split screen
effect. As the for the audio I'd be fine just choosing between the 2
for the audio to use.

I'm currently using Pinnacle studio 9 and haven't been able to figure
it out. Do I need to purchase an add-on or am I out of luck and need
to go with some different software. Any advice would be greatly
appreciated.

HollywoodFX offers split screens and many more things. Studio
itself uses a single video track timeline, which rules out anything
which involves more than one video clip playing at a time. Pinnacle
sometimes offers HFX for Studio at bargain prices -- it is a pretty
good add-on, popular for other editors too, but it is specific to the
program it plugs into (you can't use the Studio version in Premiere,
for example).

But if you've reached the point where you want to do multi-source
videos, and maybe play more with audio and video effects, you might
want to think about moving up to something which does that internally,
and much more flexibly. Vegas Video is a popular choice -- lots of
features, not too hard to learn. Nothing as easy as Studio to use,
but with power comes complexity.
