Hey boB... Tail Rotor Stuff!

Hi boB... I recall one post from you that mentioned that you hardly ever
use the pedals for helicopter flying. I can look it up if you don't
remember. Although this isn't true for me. Thus I have some questions
for you.

As you already know, I use a RC controller to fly with because I think
it is the best of both worlds. And operating the tail rotor (or the
rudder in a fixed wing) isn't that big of a deal. Although I fly my
helicopters under MS FS with the realism set to max.

And if I don't use the tail rotor control, I have to tilt say the Bell
to the right side a bit to fly straight. Which is what I do when I fly
one handed (using no pedals). Although while two handed, I have to keep
about 30% right pedal (in your terms) to keep it flying straight and
level. This is necessary to counter act the torque of the main rotor
blades.

Thus my main question: How do you fly a heli without using the pedal
control most of the time?

Cheers!

Hi Bill,

It will take a bit but I'll explain it. As I said in the last message
it only works if the realism settings are left of medium. Placing the
sliders full right kinda replicates the real thing (left pedal when
adding power - right pedal decreasing power.)

I even have some traffic pattern pictures I captured in a normal traffic
pattern. Gabriella and I just got word that one of our very best rescue
Akitas died of bloat this evening. The family that adopted him is
extremely depressed as are we. I'll write a little later.

Oh I sorry to hear this. I'll catch you at some other time.

Cheers!

Thanks Bill. I appreciate it. Do this. Set the realism level for
whichever helicopter you want to use from medium down. I haven't found
any that will react properly to power changes. Center the helo on the
runway with your outside view, and add power slowly. The aircraft will
come to a hover and will maintain runway heading. Slowly apply forward
cyclic and the aircraft will start forward at which time you may need
some lateral cyclic motion to maintain heading. Once over 10 knots or
so just fly it like a fixed wing. When you want to land you also fly it
like a fixed wing except on final where you do not hold a steady
airspeed. Helicopter approaches are flown with an apparent brisk walk
airspeed. At 500 ft AGL the airspeed to maintain that brisk walk is
much higher than when you are at 50 feet AGL. So the helicopter
approach is flown with a continual slowing of airspeed until you
terminate at a hover or to the ground. I usually check mark the
"Auto-Rudder" on the realism page because it maintains a centered ball
but even with it unchecked the helicopter flys just as well.
