Hi I am new to THGC and new to the hobby of building computers.
I plan to build a new system and have been researching lately and
came up with these options so far:
---------------------------------
Mobo:
ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe
or
MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI
or
DFI LANPARTY nF4 SLI-DR
(but there seems to be 3 different
verisons, which I can not seem to differentiate...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Submit=Go&DEPA=0&type=&description=DFI+SLI&Category=0&minPrice=&maxPrice=&Go.x=0&Go.y=0)

CPU:
AMD Athlon 64 3500+
-Core: Venice

Memory:
CORSAIR XMS 1GB (2 x 512MB)
184-Pin DDR SDRAM
DDR 550 (PC 4400) Dual Channel

Harddrives:
Maxtor MaXLine III Serial ATA150
Space: 300GB
Speed: 7200 RPM
Cache: 16MB

Video Card(s):
eVGA Geforce 6800GT 256MB
or
BFG Tech Geforce 6800GT 256MB
or
XFX Geforce 6800GT 256MB

PSU:
Haven't really looked into, but
I believe I'll need at least a
500W unit at least.

Case:
There seems to be not many reviews
on cases, but I think I will go for
either go for the:

Thermaltake Shark
or
AntecPerformance Plus PLUSVIEW1000AMG

Total Price:
$1500-1800 about
---------------------------------

I plan to most likely buy 2 of the Maxtors for 600GB total space,
and maybe set them in a RAID 0 array. I haven't really
researched on RAID setups, but I know there is RAID 0,1,5,10?

I plan to buy one 6800GT card at first, it really
depends on the future of SLI, because as it is right
now, I am not so sure if it is just hype, so I figured
a 6800GT is a good card at that price for its
performance. I can always throw in a second 6800GT later.

I am currently deciding which mobo to go with and
which video card to go with. The prices on the mobos
seem to all hover around $175, and the 6800GT cards
are around $350, except for the BFG, which is $380,
but has a faster core clock speed of 370MHz vs. 350MHz.
This setup I believe is pretty future proof.

Please feel free to criticize my build. It is welcomed.

Thanks in advance!

Just curious to why ASUS is a no-no.
I was thinking MSI because it has Creative
onboard audio and because I have read DFI's
onboard audio is not the greatest, and a sound
card is suggested, but I can take the audigy 2
rom my old computer.

The Corsair i was told i can clock to the same
timings, well to: 2-2-2-7.

And for PSU, my friend has suggested a Antec
Phantom 500 500W Silent Power Supply Retail,
which seems real nice actually, but is expensive
novelty of having 0db.

But I am thankful you brought to my attention
options, I like options.

I'd probably go for the DFI + a sound card. Honestly if you're into gaming you don't want to use onboard sound anyways.

Also, the A64 thrives on lower latency moreso than high memory speeds. As for a PSU a 520W PowerStream or ModStream would probably power that system pretty well.

Get cheaper memory if you are not overclocker.
Then get cheapest socket 939 CPU you can find, and try to live with it for a month or two (or even 3).

After few months go and buy dual core, prices are then lower than now (prices always drop when there is availability).

Total price is max 1800 for a Dual core SLI capable system. :)
