Hi,
which one these cpus is for gaming,
Intel Xeon E3-1220 or Intel Pentium G3258,
you don't have to worry about the other specs, I GOT THEM COVERD.

The Pentium will beat the Xeon only in single-threaded games, which are almost extinct now. Even though the Pentium has better single thread performance, the Xeon will win in pretty much all games since most use 4 or more threads. The Xeon will have at least 50% better performance over the Pentium, depending on your system specs and the games you play.

what motherboard problems?

If these are the only CPUs that you have, I'd recommend going with the Xeon E3, but keep in-mind that the Xeon requires a certain motherboard to run it properly, and single-core performance is a lot less than the Pentium, but the Pentium is much less powerful overall, so if you don't have the correct motherboard to run a Xeon, then at least put an overclock on the Pentium to squeeze a bit more power out. So overall, if you don't have the correct motherboard for the Xeon E3, then overclock the Pentium and plop that in there

you just need a motherboard with LGA 1155 to use that xeon (if its not a v3, which uses LGA 1150)

E3-1220 is a Sandy-Bridge, lga 1155 cpu.
E3-1220 v2 is an Ivy-Bridge, lga 1155 cpu.
E3-1220 v3 is a Haswell cpu, lga 1150 cpu.

Depending on actual version, you'll see benefits accordingly. The v3 is the strongest of the 3,has the most upgraded instruction sets etc, but is also the worst heat-wise, 80W, along with the Sandy. The Ivy is best with heat, only 69W. The Sandy supports ddr3 1066/1333, the v2/v3 support 1333/1600 memory. So depending on version and your ram, you may not be able to get full performance.

The P g3258 is LGA1150, overclockable on some b/h85 boards, so is a popular choice among crowds that stick to single thread heavy games like Skyrim. There are mods to work around some quad core requirements like in gta V, but unless you are pushing a very high OC, the discrepancy between the 4 core written games and the dual core cpu become glaringly obvious with very, very low fps. Mmorpg's like WoW, or even multi-player BF4 suffer horrendously with a slow dual core, you'll need 4.5GHz or better to even think about trying to keep up with a 64player server.

Each has its good and bad points, but for general, all around decent gaming, the Xeon wins easily. A dual core cpu just can't cover all the bases a quad core can.

for gaming g3258 is a beast, g3258 is better than the xeon because only a few games need cores maximum games are good enough with a dual core even if u oc the g3258 upto 4.2 ghz so u can play gta 5 on it. so go for a g3258 which cost 1/3 of it

just u want a z97 mobo (because this chipset is officially for oc)
and a decent cooler for oc like hyper 212 evo

Xeon e3-1220?
Brother, its a server processor, it isnt optimized for gaming. Most probably it is for Auto CAD or rendering or video editing stuff.
And see its price also. It costs like 200$.
Its no better than G3258 in gaming until 2014 games.
Yes you will get better performance with e3 1220 for 2015 games or later.
But it wont be value for money.
I dont know why you have selected a Xeon processor which is so old that it would have stopped recieving updates.
Bro, better get an i5 4570 which is priced at 190$ only and gives an mind blowing performance.
If you do video editing stuff then go for a newer generation Xeon E-1220V3 which is priced equally.
If you are looking for gaming only then go for i5 4570 or i5 4460 or i5 4440.
Whichever is easily available to you.
You can max out most games with it :)
Hope I Helped!
