So basically I randomly lost my sound after installing Windows 7 again, I checked everything and it looks fine. My rear panel refuses to work, I plug my headphones in the jack with my mic and it refuses to pick it up. The only thing that is picked up is some ATI HDMI audio thing and I installed the realtek audio drivers and they don't even work now. It keeps saying no speaker or headphones are plugged in yet they are plugged in. Also, I got some errors regarding High Definition Audio Drivers having failed to start/install or something.

Any clues on what's going on ?

Well i may have found a much easier and simple soulution than re-installing vista and updating drivers over and over, simply go to the windows button and type in Realtech HD Audio Manager (the cog one) and navigate to the tab that says default format then change the drop down tab from whatever it may currently be at (usually 48000Hz) and select a higher tab like the 192000Hz and play some audio. :) no idea why it worked but i have had problems with quality types conflicting with my motherboard before.

Thank you very match. I wasted two days to solve this issue and I was planning to buy new sound card tomorrow. It works!!!

I have a Lenovo x230. Installed Win 7 Ultimate to get bit locking from Win Pro which didn't have it. Sound gone. Went to Device Manager -> Sound, video, game controllers -> Intel Display Audio, and disable that. Realtek now works fine, so there is a conflict between the two that is resolved by disabling the Intel sound.
