I have the same dilemma with r9 280x gpu's. Have you considered the windforce edition from Gigabyte? From reviews I have seen that is the coolest one and comes second in noise after the ASUS.

Not quite:

It's neither the coolest (that titles goes to Asus or Sapphire Vapor (or Tri) X) nor the quietest (Asus, I know you said that). Its just a good value for money, not the best OCer too.

So you say ASUS is the best choice (I dont like dual-x and other sapphire cards are off budget) ? Also does ASUS combo MOBO - GPU have better compatibility/ performance?

Yes Asus will rock the benchmarks here and is worth over others. No it doesn't have better compatibility with Asus MoBo or anything like that. GPUs are compatible with PCIe gen rather than MoBo, as long as its PCI 3.0, it'll perform optimally on any MoBo, if its PCI 2.0 or lower, you'll have some performance drops (its not a cause of concern with new builds, almost all newer MoBos have 3.0).
