Hello guys

I came across this site in my search of a solution for a hard drive fix

I have this client that asked me if i could get his data out of his dead hard drive, and i say okay i wanna give it a go!

He told me the drive would not read when pluged in, maybee wrong power connected to it back in the days or something he dont know he cant remember because its a old drive with pictures on it he wants

First i thought it was stuck reader arm, but it was not and everything in there seamed fine, so i started to search and found some videos and info in google that TVS diode can go bad, so i took out the circuit board and started measuring on it, but the thing is i am not sure what readings i should get on the diffrent diodes, fuses, capasitators hope you can help me out here and also maybe find my problem and tell me if its something DIY or its a board replacement and a bios swap?

i am pretty sure i am on the right pass, but this may be out of my range soo need some help please to tell me

i post some pictures of the board and some videos of me measuring on the board, maybe you can tell me what i need to test and what output it have to give, i am pretty sure i am doing something right in locateing the problem but again not sure

or hope somebody out there have a solution

Best regard
Gizzar

Board is a Hitachi 500gb 0A58732 <--- white label number

open the drive and saw the arm and it looked okay i gently pushed it back from the lock side if you know what i mean and it was not stuck the reader head was in parking mode and the arm could move
Yes, I knew what you meant...just wanted verification.

You pretty much made it exponentially worse.
A stuck arm was not the original problem, AND you introduced dust into it. And it still is not readable.

You can check the resistance across the tvs diode to see if it is good. If it has failed it will be a dead short.

If the drive spins up or shows any indication of power, the tvs diode is fine.

The tvs diode would only fail if the drive was getting powered improperly.

Opening the drive probably introduced dust unless you were in a clean room wearing proper gear. Even microscopic dust can cause problems. I suggest you don't open drives unless you are a trained professional with proper equipment.

What does the drive do when plugged in?

i know it has to be very clean, but think i did okay, so i dont think this would be a problem, anyway since i recived it it was totally dead..

I know but we took the chance because if i dont fix it he is gonna trash it i think, even he really wants the pictures on it,

when plugged in nothing happens, all dead no spin no sound no nothing

you can see the videos i posted, maybee you can point me in the right dirrection where to try measuring

Have you tried just installing it into a pc using a normal sata power connector and sata data cable?

I had an external HDD die and the control board was causing the problem. When I extracted the hdd inside and plugged it into a pc using sata it worked fine.

no not direct to a PC with sata cable and sata power, but should me SATA multi cable not be okay here? its sata power and connector ti USB

"I have this client that asked me if i could get his data out of his dead hard drive "

First rule....don't make things worse.

What specific drive is this? Make/model.

Sorry 🙁 dont think i did though but, yeah if it was that important for him i would not do it, and send him to a recovery service but he asked and i told him all about it, and we would give it a go...

MODEL is: Hitachi 500GB HTS545050B9A300 5400RPM 5v 700mA DC SATA 3.0gb/s

this one i guess :)

Unfortunately DATA retrieval center does not accept any drive that has been opened. I know I worked for one and it was one of the first question asked before accepting the drive. Not saying they all do but there is a reason why they don't. A HDD should only be opened in a Clean Room where no dust particles or anything else can get on the platter.

yeah and i know, but as i said we tryed to take the chance, because he wont take it to a recover service and pay to much, then he will toss the drive i think, so it was like try or throw..

but yeah i know

so now that we are where, how do it found the error so i can see if i can do anything ?

Please upload that to imgur.com, and put the link here.
My systems and browser had issues with your previous pics.

pictures in thread is just pictures of the PCB board you also can see in the youtube videos,

The medion enclosure was just a plastic box, i dont have it here right now can have it for tomorrow though??

i should try connect stright up to PSU in pc then maybee?

Without actual details, no one out here knows.

Specific make/model/connection type.

"another Hard drive with that SATA to usb cable" means nothing. Woefully lacking actual info.

I tryed this cable ( https://cdon.dk/hjemme-elektronik/kabeladapter-usb-3-0-til-2-5-hdd-sata-2-5-tommer-p54208105 )on the hitachi 500gb and didnt get detected in bios or in windows

but i just tryed this same cable on a WD 500gb, and could not find it in disk mangement havent check bios yet

now i thinks its the cable maybe?
