HL² Online registration via 56K modem

Hello All,

Today I baught HL2 and tried to install it.

It takes 1 hour to download 15MB and ends with the message:

Game starts in 300 minutes, please wait...

Did some try to install it with a modem connection?

How long does it takes normally?

i used a 56k modem it didnt take as long as it said it would

Steam is basically writing off all those who have 56K connections.

Hell, I have a free HL2 coupon. All I have to do is download the game.
Let's see 4.5 gigs on a 56K connection would take me (at 2 megs every 10
minutes) 375 hours. Hmmmm!!!!!

Sure, you can't buy a game through steam with a 56k modem but you can
install via cd/dvd then update. I don't think that Valve will stop supplying
via cd/dvd until the majority of people have broadband, which won't be for a
while yet.

If it's not in a box it's not on the shelves and if it's not on the shelves
you miss out on a lot of browsers and casual buys especially after the first
rush - I can't be the only one who goes into a shop looking for cheap
bundles of last years games that look interesting - sure I could find them
on the web but you are never just passing by on the web.

my dialup connection is a whopping 24k on a good day. I managed to get
it to install and update no problem (bought the cd's). Validation,
Decryption, and update took about 2 1/2 - 3hrs. but it's worth the wait.

Its not Valve that distribute on CD/DVD anyway, it is Vivendi

If you're in the UK though, you have to put up with an automatic cut-off
every 2 hours, unless you want to use pay-per-minute. 🙁

Maybe they've changed their policy. Most unmetered access deals (Tiscali,
Flyer, et al) still do the cut-off thing.

Steam has got a resume feature.. I managed to crash out of windows while
one of the HL2 preloads was happening (my own fault for faffing
about)... When i rebooted, Steam carried on updating from where it left
off.. i was worried that it would have to start again, but checked and
it resumed from 62% of 1GB or something like that.. 🙂

I don't think Valve or anyone else believe that this is going to change.
Afterall, the internet hasn't displaced any other physical medium.
(books, newspapers, magazines, TV, radio, CD, DVD...). if anything, the
internet merely complements existing mediums.

No. It complements existing media. I don't think it has anything to do with
people who can speak with the dead.
