I am planning to do some edits of home videos.I have a fairly good
understanding in terms of the hardware requirement. I need some help
with the software? I have a Sony MiniDV camcorder. I need to do three
operations

1. Transfer the DV data from the camcorder tape to the computer hard
drive. I dont plan to capture any analog video directly to the
computer.
2. Review and Edit the video. Mainly cut/splice, some simple title and
audio
mix/dub.
3. Author a DVD or VCD and burn it into a disc. I specially need to be
able to do VCD in PAL format ( I know the quality will be lower than
DVD ).

Any suggestion on the software tool(s) to use? Indiviual or as a
package? Any brand suggestion? This is mainly for home movies for
friend or family. So I don't want to spend money on a pro level setup.
The transfer and DVD/VCD authoring can be slow. I dont plan to do it
too often and I should be able to let it run overnight. The editing
should not be too slow as that will take up my interactive time.

Thanks again for all your inputs.

Then Firewire is the way to go.

If your computer has XP it has MovieMaker on it. If it doesn't have version
2, you can download it for free.

I've had my camera for about four months now and played with trial versions
of various packages. I finally bit the bullet and purchased Sony's Movie
Studio 3.0. It was a toss-up between that and Ulead's Video Studio 7. The
Sony came with Sonic MyDVD, which I made two very pretty coasters with.
Other than being unable to actually burn DVD's, I liked it a lot. Since
actually producing DVD's was somewhat important to me I switched to using
Roxio Easy CD and DVD Creator 6, which came free with my DVD burner.
