Hello, and thanks for viewing this post. hopefully this makes sense.

My cable modem on has ONE input and ONE output.

I am a landlord , I have 5 tenants living in the same house.2 live downstairs where the modem and router is and 3 living upstairs and they will be connected to the router WIRELESS .

I want the guys in the same room as the router/modem to be WIRED directly from my modem ( but it only has one output!) So thats why i am wondering if i can hook a switch to my cable modem.

Can i hook up a 5 port switch to my cable modem, then run an Ethernet cable from the switch to my router?

The whole idea is I want to have 2 people connected to the internet coming straight from the modem and 3 guys wireless from the router.

ALSO,
I pay for 300Mbps, should i be using Cat 5,5e,6 or 7 for my ethernet cables?

Thanks for taking time to help

Solution
If that is an actual modem (make/model please?), it can't work as you desire.
A modem talks to one and only one device. You can't put a switch behind that and have multiple devices.

This is what the router does...create multiple internal IP addresses (both wired and WiFi) for you and your tenants.

It must go... ISP->modem->router->multiple devices.

Unless you have multiple public IP addresses (costs extra), then you have to have everyone connected to the router. That could be wired or wireless, but everybody connected to the router. IF you want the upstairs to not be able to see the downstairs, then use a wired router first for the downstairs, and a second wireless router that the upstairs will connect to. The double router will make the downstairs look like the "internet" to the upstairs and they won't be easily able to get to the downstairs network.

For your situation, the only thing you need is a wireless router with multiple Ethernet outputs (most have them). For instance, this is what I use: Linksys E3200

Ideally, what you want to do is run Ethernet throughout the complex as well as wireless on each level. This way, everyone gets a solid connection to the Internet for PCs AND wireless connectivity for cells and tablets.

To get more plugs you would go modem->router->switch-> devices or access points

Most routers already have a 4-6 on the LAN side. If you don't need anymore then you won't need the switch.

For security reasons for the user, you don't really want anyone plugged into the modem. You can plug more than one router into the modem with a switch if you had multiple ips. I don't think that's what you want.
