Hi,

I am fixing my neighbors computer and it turns out the hard-drive adapter (as my best guess) is faulty and causing all the issues.

Problem is the laptop is from 2005 and also I need to somehow get one with a wire like the photos.

Any idea what this is spercifically called or how I can get a replacement one as cheap as possible? I live in the UK. - the laptop is an old eversham voyager.

Its a small to bigger end (44 pin - male - small) to (43 pin - female - big)

I have seen some online (I think - im not really sure what im looking for name wise, I know the hdd is ide for laptops)

I somehow need to have one on a wire between them though so I can fit it and have the hard drive fit properlly (I think)

Photos below - I hope someone can help me - thank you in advance

The problem with that is its not for me but my neighbor and its just an old laptop laying about he wanted me to see if i could fix - Also just looked and it says you can't install windows onto an external hard drive and have it run as if it was connected directly to the motherboard. So I still would have the same problem of not being able to use the drive as a single drive in a system like normal.

Ok ignore my last comment - I am now getting an external hard drive enclosure for it - but on the link for the ide 2.5 to usb - it says in the description "You can reuse your current 3.5" IDE interfaced PC, Mac or Server hard drive"

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/components-upgrades/internal-hard-drives/enclosures/dynamode-usb-hd2-5-bn-2-5-ide-usb-2-0-hard-drive-enclosure-black-19273072-pdt.html

Should that not say 2.5" Laptop hard drive instead of 3.5"?

Is it a typo and its fine to get it for the 2.5" drive for the laptop?

--- I messured out the dimensions it says on a bit of paper and the laptop hard drive fits fine and does not seem like it would even fit a 3.5" hard drive, Especially depth -

the laptop drive has about 1 or 2 mm to spare.

Length has about 2 cm to spare (Probablly for the connectors etc inside.

Width has also about 1-2mm to spare.

Am i good to go with this and assume its just a typo after all this or should i be careful?

Thank you Timez?

It's just the manufacturer being lazy. That same company manufacturers enclosures for 3.5-inch hard drives too, but they've evidently used the same description for both sizes instead of editing it for the smaller enclosure. I often come across that.
Just make sure you buy the correct one as advertised and you'll be fine.

As to your comments about not being able to install Windows on an external hard drive, that's quite true. But that does not mean you can't read from or write to an externally connected drive that's already got Windows on it.

Can you also get those for multimedia external hard drives (the enclosures I mean) My friend wants one and I said I'll put it together for him if you can get them?

Thank you
