How can I restore my PC using an image?

Hello,

I am wanting to change the HDD in my laptop. I created an image of my system through Macrium Reflect (the file it created is a Disk partition image), and I was wondering, after I install the new blank HDD, how do I restore that new drive with the image I created from Macrium Reflect?

Also, the new drive currently has an old OS on it, do I have to wipe it clean first? Or will the image restore automatically clear it out?

If there is no information on the "old OS," that you want, then yes go ahead and wipe that first, but it doesn't matter as you will just have less space because of the old os and it will be a duel boot. Anyways, if you just want 1 os, then delete the old. For the image, I am going to assume you have windows, then you can insert a windows install disk but select the image instead once into it.

Yes it is Windows 10, so I just go through the usual WIndows 10 reinstallation but choose the image file that Macrium created?

The Macrium image is on a flash drive.

Ok, you can try just plugging the flash drive in but I don't think that alone will work. Maybe if you insert a repair disk for windows and then select image from their. You can also try googling it.

Yeah, I'm gonna try putting the flash drive in along with the Windows 10 installation and see if that works.

Didn't seem to work, I'll have to look into it more since this is my first time doing these image backups and restores. I may just to a fresh install since nothing was on the other drive anyways.

If there is nothing on the drive then why do image back up, unless you don't have the activation key? Anyways, you can try googling it, I never did restore either but I thought I remembered seeing image restore on either an install disk or a repair disk.

Only reason I wanted to try an image restore is so I wouldn't have to reinstall Windows Updates but it's no big deal. I've got it up and running already by now.
