I have never done this but I have a new cpu and a new heatsink and fan.

The most I have done is replace ram and videocards.

By the way my heatsink is coolermaster vortec 752. I'm more worried about taking the existing one off though...

Should I try this or wait and get someone to show me?

Don't worry about it, it's not too hard. usually the heatsink will have some kind of lever which you have to release, then usually some clips will release sometimes with a bit of jiggery pokery. atfer that twist slightly back and forth then pull off this should result in it coming off easily. once its off, pull the little leve by the side of the socket up and lift the processor out. get hold of some alcohol or TIM cleaner and remove the thermal paste carefully. replace processor or insert new processor. place new heatsink ontop and follow instructions to mount it. as for new thermal paste. if it comes pre applied... great, if not push you finger through a sandwich bag so its stretched around, then place a rice sized piece on the processor then using ur covered finger smooth it over until you have a dulled finish... IT DOESN'T NEED TO BE THICK AT ALL!!!
