The wire that comes from the power button in my case is a 5 pin connector. The front panel header on my motherboard is a 9 pin header. The wire is also not long enough to reach my motherboard header. Is there an adapter that would help?

Solution
Can I connect the dell conector to a regular header or if is there an adapter?
You can get male to female dupont jumper wires the link is just to show you what they look like, shop around ask your local electronics stores, you would only need two of those if you only want to connect the power switch and as you can see they go up to 30cm and of course you could daisy chain them although that would be more failure points.
This assumes that the mobo has the normal pins sticking out and that the connector you showed would connect to that.
The power button is two wires, positive and neutral to switch power on and off, if you have different headers one the mobo and the front panel and want to adapt them you will probably have to connect every wire yourself.
As above already said give the models so that people can have a look at the pinouts and see how messy a job it would be.

Here is a picture of the power button wire connector [link to picture], The front panel header is the standard 9 pin header.

looks like dell connector

Yes, if that's the pinout of your mobo, then 6 and 8 will turn your PC on, the order doesn't matter as long as both are connected, the switch just connects both pins so polarity doesn't matter.
I just got the jumper wires today and tried it out. The computer does not work proper with the wires. When the jumper wires are connected, the computer immediately powers on after being plugged in and then powers off after a few seconds and won't turn on. The computer only works properly when the jumper wires are disconnected and I use a screwdriver to turn it on.

That sounds like the power button is stuck or it is fried.
If you keep the power button pressed it powers down any PC at any time.
