How do I know an ink refill kit will work unless the ink comes from the manufact

Hello, I'm new to the ink cartridge refill kits, but won't the ink itself tell you whether it will work or not? Everyone seems to have a different ink. I do believe that what will make it work is the exact same ink as the manufacturer uses. Am I wrong or is there a 'one ink fits all' type that does work?
