how do i know what kind of ram to buy for my older sony vaio desktop, only has 500mb with a 2.8 processor.
system is windows xp

500 MB of RAM implies that it is DDR RAM. any way you can open it up and tell me what it says on the RAM sticks? the speeds and timings have to match.

there are 4 slots total. Two sets of two. one open in each set.
Would it actually be worth putting some gigs in this older desktop, with a decent processor or would it still not be that fast?

well you have a Pentium 4, so the best you could get in there is a old core two quad. and the most RAM that will be supported is going to be around 2 or 4 Gb so, it might just be worth building or getting a new PC, as that would not really boost the PCs speed enough to make all the work be worth it.

cool. Thanks again for your help. Yea it is my brothers old computer that he was trashing. I fixed it up the best I could but is a slug, super slow. Not worth it considering I have a nicer desktop and two laptop as toys I'd rather put the money into.

Eh, keep it as a 32-bit Linux box. When/if C2Qs are super cheap plop one in and run Linux
