Just purchased a Saphire HD 7870, really good card, really like looking and everything works fine.

But, most of the games that the system should be able to run require low quality or are really laggy. The computer is somewhat old, I'm wondering what can I do or clear up to give my computer a bigger push? Would a defrag or deleting some applications help?

Solution

bottlenecked is when the CPU cant keep up and make frames for the GPU fast enough, so its going technically the speed of the CPU, which is not letting the GPU go to its full extent of performance.

you have a Intel Core duo. thats a old CPU and shouldnt be used for gaming anymore, the lowest you can really go now is an i3 processor

pentium dual core* edit

Oh, so it's my CPU?
Makes sense I guess.

THe reason I was thinking it could be clogged downloads or something was I was running the game 'Chivalry' decently on medium a few days ago, and I try today after I downloaded some more games and it kinda killed over on itself with all the lag when I tried it again today.

yes its your CPU. i would upgrade to an i5 or i7 and a new Motherboard.

MB: GA Z77X-UD3H 140$ on Amazon
CPU: i5 3570K 220$ on Amazon

i recommend these parts
