How do I replace external cache?

I have a Pentium 120 with a 256k L2 external cache. The cache, however, seems to have failed, and I need to replace it. Looking on the board, it comes out easily and it seems to me that it should be reasonably easy to get a new one.

However, looking on a few online stores I can't find external caches on their own.

Looking for some help here, then.

1) Where can I buy an external cache on its own?
2) What prices are normal?
3) Do I need a particular type of cache to fit next to my P120?
4) My motherboard will support up to 512k cache, and I figure if I buy a new one I'll get that. Does that present any problems?

Do you have a COAST module (Cache on a Stick) or cache chips? Lots of venders carry COAST modules, including www.computersurplusoutlet.com If you have chips, pull them from a blown motherboard.

No Idea where you can get one or the cost. You might try contacting Memory Man at http://www.memman.com.

If it will help, it sounds like you have a COAST (Cache On A STick) module. I had a board with one of those and I remember the manual saying to make sure you used the correct module if you had to replace it.

If you upgrade to 512K, you must make sure you motherboard has the correct amount of TAG RAM, which is a little piece of memory that maintains the cache index (or so I've read).

Sounds like I have a COAST module. The cache is similar to a RAM SIMM - slightly smaller, and without the clips, but plugs in vertically to a socket. There are two 'boards' or plugs, each of which has about 20 connectors (double sided). One is larger than the other.

I'll have a look at those sites.

Thanx!
