Hi people I hope i picked the right category. Here is my problem. I have a tablet Dell venue 8 3830 4.4.2 KitKat android and I got my XBOX 360 controller to work on it the problem is that there is only one spot to charge the device from and that is the micro usb port. I dont want to drain the battery so fast and i like to keep it charged so I have a charger in it at mostly all times. I have a multi usb dock with one male and 4 female slots I am hoping to use to charge my device and to hook the XBOX 360 controller into. Now here is my real problem I have all kinds of USB variants but no cords with male on both sides I need it for the usb wall socket charger to the multi usb dock so I can charge my device while i use the controller at the same time. I cut 2 male usb cords from the other non usb ends and spliced the 2 male usb's together i matched all colors green to green red to red white to white and black to black and I did this with 2 separate sets of cords soldered all of the wire ends together for a complete contact using silver bearing solder (I used silver because that's what I have at the moment and I believe it to be more conductive) and to my dismay both sets of usb cords don't work. I hooked both sets of cords from my tablet to the charger and from my tablet to my pc and it doesn't charge and my pc doesn't recognize that it is connected the cords are good because i tested them I am wondering if I am supposed to flip the colors around I know that Black and Red are Power and Green and White are data now this is why im here I want to ask before I do anything stupid but should I flip the colors and do Black to Red and White to Green? I am thinking that either my tablet knows somehow that the cord is altered or that the usb inside wires need to be flipped. It's weird because my other set of cording I made from 2 identical cords they were both usb male on one end and micro usb on the other end. I matched all colors correctly and they didn't work either but when I tested them out before I spliced them together they both recognized on my pc that it was connected to my tablet. I have looked every where and found nothing on making a homemade male to male usb cable but everything else like usb repair and joystick repair said to match the colors I did that for both sets of cables and they still don't work and that is why I am wondering if the internal wires need to be matched opposite to the corresponding colors so say Black and Red is for power and White and Green is for data so put Black on Red Red on Black White on Green and Green on White maybe??? I don't want to have to go out and buy a new male to male usb cord if i can simply make it at home for free if someone could help me out with my problem that would be great. I hope to hear back from someone soon.

Looks like I might have to go that route but now I just want to do it to learn how to make it. I am really good with wires and wire repair but this one has got me stumped and I really want to figure this one out.

If you get it wrong you will damage something, are you that curious to take that chance?

Not really no I just want to know for future references so if I need the knowledge then it can be used. That is why I am here at toms hardware so I could get help from someone that is experienced in this matter

Maybe you can get some legitimate information from the links from the pictures below.

The scariest thing regarding USB sealed cabling made all over the world, is they may not even be exact wire color coded!

(Danger Will Robinson!)

Because no one is really expected to cut and re-solder miss-matched USB cabeling together, so whatever colors are under the main insulation matters to the cable manufacturer, as long as the end result is the wires properly connected to each plug end.

So who is to say that Taiwan, China, Korea, Mexico, etc., all follow the same USB wire color code for a sealed USB cable, since once the main outer insulation is on, unless you cut the wiring and skin it all the way to the plug itself, you do not know where each colored wire actually goes to, in a sealed rubber plug?

Well I ordered this from newegg "http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812423037"A 6 foot cord for $1.29 with a $1.99 shipping. Thats really cheap even with shipping for a 6 foot cord. I would have probably spent 15 or 20 bucks at a store for something like that. But still I am wondering if it was my tablet that knows there was an alteration in the usb cord or if it knew that part of the line was unprotected from outside signals and maybe thats why it didn't work? Who knows but hopefuly someone will come on here that knows how to merge cords together. I still want to know how the heck to make it work?
