How do I split an MP4 file in windows into a smaller recording?

I'm doing a presentation for class and want to show a snippet of an mp4 video in my powerpoint/prezi. I tried using VLC player but it only records audio, not video. No luck with fraps. Any ideas?

i was going to suggest ffmpeg, but if freemake does it and doesn't transcode the files, it'd probably be easier. otherwise, try this:
