pretty straight forward but my monitor runs at 165 hz and i connected my hdmi cable from the laptop to the external monitor and im looking at my nvidia control panel and it says my monitor is connected to my native intel gpu instead of my nvidia gpu
This is most likely true. As far as I know, the max for HDMI at 1080p is 120hz. U will have to switch to DP or USB-C as boju suggested.
laptop model is lenovo y520
my monitor is a sceptre e255b
and when i try to turn up the hz in settings it only gives the option up to 60 hz

Depending on your monitor model and resolution, 165Hz via Hdmi might not be possible and need Usb C or Displayport.
Which laptop and monitor model do you have?
