pretty straight forward but my monitor runs at 165 hz and i connected my hdmi cable from the laptop to the external monitor and im looking at my nvidia control panel and it says my monitor is connected to my native intel gpu instead of my nvidia gpu

Solution
This is most likely true. As far as I know, the max for HDMI at 1080p is 120hz. U will have to switch to DP or USB-C as boju suggested.

Actually, Hdmi 1.3/1.4 1080p 16:9 is capable of 144Hz depending if monitor manufacturer didn't limit. Hdmi 2 up to 240Hz, Hdmi 2.1 480Hz.

Monitor in question is capable of 165Hz via both means, Hdmi and DP according to it's specs. The laptop's Hdmi seems to be the limiting factor, hopefully Usb c does the job.
Usually with laptops, the dedicated gpu sits behind the scenes rendering frames in performance mode and then passes the frame off to the igpu and then igpu passes it to the screen in which it controls. Sometimes laptop's video port may be connected to the gpu directly but not always. You'd have to try find specific circuit diagrams which can be a pita to find.

See this and fiddle with settings. Try force gpu for particular apps. Have an fps monitor program and compare between forcing gpu and also igpu and see if there's a difference in fps.

If performance via the Hdmi port is not affected by gpu prioritising, it might be connected to the gpu directly. I would then test gpu prioritising again with only the laptop screen between igpu and gpu to compare fps.

I see that you created a 2nd thread. Should have explained that here you cant set 165Hz.

Depending on your monitor model and resolution, 165Hz via Hdmi might not be possible and need Usb C or Displayport.

Which laptop and monitor model do you have?

laptop model is lenovo y520
my monitor is a sceptre e255b

Ok your monitor does 165Hz via Hdmi 2 or Displayport 1.2.

If this is your laptop, https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/laptops/legion-laptops/lenovo-legion-y-series/Legion-Y520/p/88GMY500808

Ports;
  • 1 x USB Type-C (USB 3.0 and DisplayPort function)
  • HDMI
My guess is Hdmi is connected to the igpu (Igpu afaik doesn't support high refresh rates?) and USB Type C to Displayport is probably what's needed and this connection probably is connected directly the the gpu.
