How do you do it? (SPOILERS)

Hi All

I'm on my zillionth replay at the moment, and am consciously trying to
tackle quests in ways I've not tried before. For example, when
attacking the slaver stronghold in the Slums, I've *always* gone in
via the sewers, thinking that a direct assault would be too difficult.
But no! This time we (Mage, Minsc, Jaheira and Yoshimo) just went in
through the front door, and it was relatively easy. Lots of places to
ambush the bad guys, or trap them in a doorway, and you don't start
off in a huge room with loads of them surrounding you.

Many (most?) quests are linear (Shadow dungeon, planar sphere,
unseeing eye) but there must be some others where I'm in a rut. The
Planar Prison comes to mind - has anyone tackled it head-on, or do you
all take the long way round? Must try it and see.

Does this strike a chord with anyone else, or is it just me?

Do the Planar Sphere quest and attract the attention of all three
demons and their helpers before starting to fight.

Then go back to the sphere and rush through the cold and
hot area, meanwhile dropping a demon heart in the golem,
and lure all monster to you while having fun with Tolgerias.

I don't think that tackling the Planar Prison head-on is *possible*.
For the following reason: On the short route, the *ENTIRE* path is
blocked - twice - by those traps that drag you down off the main
pathway into a room full of monsters: whereas on the long route, you
can walk around the traps.

And the trouble is, when you come out of those rooms full of monsters,
guess where the game places you - the WRONG side of the traps. So you
can never cross them.

I suppose technically it would be possible to defeat the prison's
Warden by shooting him across the traps - while at the same time
dodging his own spells and those of his friends - but then how would
you get to him to get the key?

I like a challenge, but ... :)

Actually, the Planar Sphere is my least favourite of the big quests -
I often don't bother with it.

Ah, I never knew that. It always irritated me that as soon as you
rescue the prisoners you get teleported home - no chance to look at
the other path.
That's a pity; another one for the "linear quest" list, then.

If you solo you leave those trapped area's on the right side
and you are able to reach the Warden. I've done it with
a single cleric.

All the extra 'chambers' are being closed after you kill
the cambion or destroy the orb (I'm not sure which of
the two). So from then on, you can walk over the floor
marks without entering a new room.

I did just that my first time through - my party was all very
missile-oriented, and I just attacked every enemy on sight (fireballing
those just out of sight). In this case, this strategy was a complete
disaster, and I wound up reloading and doing it again the long way
round.
