How do you know how long a crossfire bridge must be?

I am about to buy a whole bunch of parts for a new computer including duel XFX Radeon HD 7970 3GB Black Editions.

The motherboard I am going to get is a ASUS SABERTOOTH 990FX R2.0 AM3+ AMD 990FX.
I plan to put the cards into the 1st and 3rd PCI-E slots giving a 2 slot gap between them. (As suggested in the newegg video)

How long of a Crossfire bridge would I need to bridge that gap and to run the cards correctly?

Can I just throw in there that the sabertooth is a piece of $hit?

You should know that, although it does look cool, it's a rip-off.
Asus took a low-mid range board, and put "thermal armor" on it, and doubled the price. All the armor does, as you would expect, is make the motherboard HOTTER. So you pay through the nose for a mediocre motherboard that makes your components hotter... how is that a good thing at all?

Get a decent motherboard, made by MSI, Asrock, or Gigabyte, that has x16 / x8 in crossfire. That's all you need.

That didnt answer my question about the Crossfire bridge length which I will need to know no matter what Motherboard I get.

If ya like I would love a suggestion for an actual motherboard to replace it.

It needs to handle crossfire of course with 2 16x slots that are at least 1 slot apart to allow for optimal cooling of the GPUs. As well as my question answered about crossfire length.

The CPU must also handle at least 32GB of DDR 1866 ram and it will have a AMD FX-8350 Vishera 4.0GHz (4.2GHz Turbo) Socket AM3+ 125W Eight-Core Desktop Processor FD8350FRHKBOX.

If you have any suggestions go ahead.
Also still need to know suggested crossfire length with 1-2 slots between cards.

did you plan on dual 7970?personally i think it will be better if you get intel cpu instead of amd fx cpu. but that's just me though. about the bridge try looking the flexible one. that way you don't have to worry on which slot you 're going to put your gpu into

Your cards should come with crossfire bridges (my 7870 did). They are flexible so I'm sure it will fit.

as suggested by @renz496 get a flexible bridge and you are free to choose any slot you like

The amd is for pure computing along with the gpu as I plan to do heavy cg rendering as well as use programs like adobe premier. I need it all for video game development too. Money is not the issue but power and sustainable cooling.

Do all flexible bridges say flexible? Also how long do you suggest? Iv only been able to find longer ones on amazon but only the shorter ones say flexible.
More worried about the bridge being too short then too long. That motherboards 16x slots are 2 slots apart. The other 2 are supposed to be x8 though its a little confusing as the card info says they are all x16 but the video said they arnt. Buying from newegg ofcourse.

yes flexible bridges says flexible.....they are the ones that does not have a pcb but a flexible wire board so to say.

get a 3way crossfire bridge and that would be enough

and don't worry about the x8 or x16 lanes...you wont get any bottleneck

Do NOT get an SLI bridge. It won't work with AMD cards.

why would there be no bottleneck with a x8 lane? I want and need to use the cards to full capacity for both opencl rendering and gaming.

there will be no bottleneck even in x8 since the data transfer rate for even a pci-e 2.0 at x8 speeds is about 4gbps i.e 40GT/s....way beyond the speeds any card can generate

and for pci-e 3 it is double of that
