How do you move the items? (A lurker vents)

Back in the days of Stadium 1 you could move all of your items from R/B/Y
into a large item storage box.
All the items from R/B/Y went into the same box and you did not need to meet
any special requirements to get items out of the box. So if you wanted to
restart a game you just dumped your items into Stadium 1 then get them all
back out after you reset the game. There was still the 100 pokemon rule for
swapping pokemon between carts. and Stadium 1 but that did not apply to the
item storage box. It was very quick and painless.

In Stadium 2 they changed the item storage so that it was dependent on id
number. It was still easy to dump items but if you reset your game you could
not get the items back out. Also item storage was separate for B/R/Y and
G/S/C. This I understand because G/S/C was backward compatible but B/R/Y was
not forward compatible and many new items were introduced in G/S/C that
would not work in B/R/Y.

Now we have Coliseum and Box.
Coliseum's only purpose (as near as I can figure) is to give access to the
pokemon from G/S/C that were not in R/S or FR/LG.
The only thing box does is store pokemon.

The only way to get items from one place to the next seems to be having your
pokemon carry the item.
Even with the much improved item moving in FR/LG you can not access the
items that are stored on your computer or in your bag. something you could
do in Stadium 1& 2.
Plus the fact that you can only trade 6 pokemon at one time before you have
to leave the trade area then remove the items then go back into the trade
area and do it all over again. If they had only improve the item
moving/storage in Box, instead of removing it entirely, I think Box would
have been a great product instead of a so-so product.

Thanks for reading (or not).

It's also another story. So far, there's the RBY story (repeated with
a few embellishments in FR/LG, the GSC story, and the RS story, all
very similar. Coliseum is at least different.

Moreover, it allows Pokemon battling with better graphics. (Anybody
remember those two huge Wailords hovering above with those stupid
grins on their faces? Weird.)

With Pokemon Box, you can move Pokemon around a lot more efficiently than
that. No more of the load-six-Pokemon and load-six-more-Pokemon, just
move all the ones you want into Box and then retrieve them later.

No, Stadium 2 could be used to move items from one cart to another;
trainer ID didn't matter. I believe Stadium 1 *did* have this
restriction, although I never tested it myself.

True.

Untrue, to an extent.

Stadium 2 had two cases - the Colour Case and the Metal Case. It was a bit
more complex, IIRC, since GSC were the first games to categorise items (into
ordinary Items, Key Items, Balls and TMs), but it was still pretty
straightforward.

Either way, you could still trade items from one cart to another using the
cases.

That's a bit like saying FL's only purpose is to give access to RBY Pokémon
and some new TMs and move tutors. In reality, of course, Colosseum's "only
purpose" is Being A Game In Its Own Right.

And allows you to play the GameBoy games on the big screen without a GameBoy
Player, but that's trivial.

'Sright.

That's what Box is for. You can move hundreds of Pokémon - and, if you
planned ahead, items - from Box to RSFL in one go. In FL, there's even an
option on the PC to manipulate items held by Pokémon in the PC without
manipulating the Pokémon themselves.

Box IS a great product, and as with all Pokémon games, the only
disappointing features are the ones not there and that were never promised.

It has been a long time since I have played Stadium 2. I remember the
different cases but I seem to remember dumping some items in the metal case
from G and not being able to get them from S or C. Also if I reset G I could
not get the items back as well. This was also true for the color case.

But you can only play R/S from box. It will not allow you to play FR/LG or
any of the other carts.
The GameBoy start up lets you play *all* GB carts. even non-Pokemon carts.

I did not mean to imply I did not like the item manipulation in FR/LG
because I like it very much.
You can move/exchange items from one Pokemon to another or move items from a
Pokemon to your bag.
But you can not move items from your PC or even your bag onto the Pokemon
you have stored or in your party.
You still have to go into your PC/bag for the items then put the Pokemon
into your party then exit the PC then give the items to your Pokemon then go
back into the PC and exchange those Pokemon with 6 new ones then go back
into the item PC and repeat ad naseum.
At least with Stadium 1 all you had to do was dump the items in the item
storage, switch carts and then pull the items out. All could be done without
leaving Stadium. Now you have to leave Box every time you want to change the
cart. and in the case of FR/LG you have to work the item movement from a
hand held or swap Box for the GB start up disc then swap back to Box again.
Not my idea of fun.

There is one disappointing feature that *is* there and that is the goofy
display section.
What is up with that mess?
They should have used that space for item storage instead. Even if they had
to keep R/S items seperate from FR/LG items ( like in Stadium 2) it would
have made for a much better product IMO.
As it stands now I still say Box is ok but it is not great.

There were restrictions, sure (I forget what they were now), but I don't
think it took too long to meet the requirements.

I certainly wasn't recommending Box as a makeshift GBPlayer - just pointing
out that it does have an additional feature.

I don't have a GBPlayer, so I do like the feature, however limited it may
be.

Ah, I see. I didn't realise this, as I hadn't thought to try it.

It shouldn't matter THAT much, surely - how many items are you likely to
want to store? Master Balls, maybe, should you have any spares, handy items
like Exp. Shares or Amulet Coins, but there aren't that many of those, and
there's no point saving items you can buy in shops, right?

But you see, this argument is still "they should have scrapped [feature X]
for a feature *I* wanted in there", which is pretty trivial since they
presumably hadn't thought about it.

Either that or they DID think about it and decided it was either impractical
or possible to abuse.

True; it also has the stage feature which I haven't been impressed by.
If they had an 8x8 stage you could at least play chess on it.

One issue is transferring things between carts. For example, I can buy
unlimited Timer Balls in R/S, and given the possible number of legendary
Pokemon in FR/LG that is important. (Last Saturday, I went to the
Minneapolis Pokemon Rocks and got the Aurora ticket, so I can go capture
Deoxsys. I can also go after MewTwo any time I like, and if I'm lucky
I'll get to go after other legendaries sometime. Timer Balls are very
useful against those sorts of Pokemon, particularly in quantity.

I'm not as worried about stuff available in FR/LG but not in R/S;
as far as I can remember, it's basically the evolution stones, and
nobody needs all that many of them.

Sure - I am not impressed by that feature, but somebody involved in the
project thought it'd be neat. At least it's different....
