How fast of a pc do you need to play mp3's?

I dont know as since mp3's came out
i had a 350 and it was fine
but my friend has a older 166 system

and will this be able to play them?
Curious

just for MP3 playing alone, not using it for anything else, you can go somewhere around the 90mhz Pentium range, probably lower, thats just the lowest Pentium I had available.

Yeah, even on my P3 500 it only uses 4% at max (that is with variable mp3's, most people use a solid bitrate which takes even less cpu)
 
I can play them no problems on a k6-233 with 64MB RAM... but it would play on Cyrix 586-100 16MB RAM, even when I did some digging and attempted to find a MP3 decoder which is efficient...
 
I had a 166MMX and could play them with no problems whatsoever. But you know, there's always the problem of CPU utilization once you start loading up other things.

just make sure you have winamp set to realtime for mp3 decoding, other wise winamp would give way for programs and skip.
 
Well, I'm not worrying now since that computer has been gone for a LONG time...

Don't expect to run mp3's smoothly on an older system with onboard sound. It might/will skip if you try to multitask. However, if you have a soundcard I would expect it to be fine.

mind giving some specs on your system?
I've had Dx4/100s not play an MP3 at full quality, had to drop it to the lowest quality setting available just to play...

I've seen mp3's playing in full quality on 75Mhz 486DX with optmized player. If you don't use GUI-based OS (a la Windows), 4-8Mb RAM should be enough.
 
you guys know about any mp3 player for windows 3.1

i got a system in my room and just wondering if there was one ot there

it hs a 83 mhz oveeeer drive chip in and 32 mb of ram so form what i read it should be possible to play stuff on it
 
You can use a 486 for playing mp3's. just make sure it has a PCI mobo for a decent sound card.

How? I could not on DX4-100 - until i move to pentium 100.
I saw a DX2-66 with MP3s, but that was mono & low spec files, and some spetial player (that come together with music files). And that system didn't work when i saw it.

how? It's not very hard. i saw people making car mp3 players out of 486's. just need a PCI motherboard for good sound card.

I didn't read the whole thread but here goes:

I had a Pentium 120 with 16 mb and it ran mp3's fine... of course... i had to buy an additional hard drive because it woud fill up after 1 or 2 mp3's =P
 
i got mp3's playing on a 486/66 but in dos and a command line player with a two text line display. winamp has a 486 optimisation option though. get the player off cnet or something, can't remember the name
 
Pentium 66 MHZ (no mistake) is fine, I tried it with some
cheap a$$ sound cards and it worked fine.

166 is more than enough.

would you like to listen to music in fast fwd mode?
mp3 players, no matter how fast they run, play these files at a predetermined speed, so his is not a problem.

but you do need a good sound card, and a reasonably fast cpu (the one you mentioned should be fine) to play mp3s well, else you will hear momentory pauses between the songs, or wont hear them at all.
