for about a year and a half ago. I went feral after a bad experience with some XBONE one games. Started watching PC builds, DIY guides, active following the tech canals on youtube, reading a lot about hardware. yeah you name it.

Thenn i started my first build. it was a budget friendly build. got myself a cheap older gen duel core AMD CPU, a ok mother board and some nice DDR3 RAM for an amazing price. ordered a ok 500w Coolermaster psu and a GTX 750Ti. a HDD and a 120GB ssd. got a cheap Inwin case, a membran keyboard and a 24" 60Hz panel and started this adventure. IT was amazing. it absoluty murdered my Console specs and i had a good ish 60fps on older games. ok settings. had a blast overklocking failing, but I was learning. also registered and got steam etc.

the problem with power, is that you want more. it did not take very long until I upgraded to the z170 platform with a 6600k and a huge air cooler ( CM 612 v.2). and some nice sticks of corsair Vengeance 2666MHz ram. then came the GPU. A Asus Rog Strix GTX 1060 6GB. i started to care more and more about my system. got a sweet SAMSUNG 960 EVO M.2 and redid my whole system with a EVGA SUPERNOVA G2 650W Gold and some Noctua fans. changed my keyboard to the CORSAIR K95 Platinum and got a ROCCAT Nyth mouse aswell. at this point I played anything at ultra 60fps. got another monitor aswell at some point since i like looking at performance

A little time went by and i uppgraded to a 24" 144Hz panel. i enjoyed This high fps gaming so much, soon, I started playing a lot with the settings. Hunting that 144 fps Lock.

after i did a full beautiful 25k build for a friend, I felt i needed to fix my own systems. Hell I was at a point of doing Ghetto mods. like destroying half my HD cage and fixing it with duct tape just to fit that 1060 strix.

The next thing were my visuals. I stripped the system and went all inn. A full White/black themed build with the NZXT H440, several140mm RGB fans, a HUE, AIO WATER cooler ( KRAKEN x62) SOme nice CORSAIR vengeance RGB ram sticks ( i dont enjoy this rainbow stuff at all. static color all the way, by the way). also a new samsung 850 500gb ssd. WHERE DOES IT END?

A few days ago i sold my 1060. lost only 60USD on selling it, not to bad. i placed a 750ti in my system as a placeholder. while waiting on a good price for a 1080 / 1080ti. less then 24 hours later i came home with a ASUS ROG STRIX 1080. just placed it in my system a few hours ago. Now i am done!

well about an hour later i ordered a new mouse, corsair GLAIVE platinum. jokes on me.

anyway. this does not seem to end. I have considered several times to jump to 1440P gaming before, but i would not do that on a bad panel. And spending a good two grand on a panel and a 1080ti this late in the 10th gen is just wasting money.

but now. i am gaming at 1080p 144Hz with a 1080. should be enough to see what happens with the hardware in the future. maby i go 1440p with a 2080TI or someting next year. I also might fo Sli with another 1080 if i can grab a cheap one close to next gen or something. it all depends.

so yeah. that is my story. felt I wanted to write something since i finally have finished my dream system from back when i started this.

only thing missing now are some nice white sleeved cables I guess.

but as for my current system. got any tips for me? what do you think of my pc experience, did you do something similar?

Love the story. The answer, is better headphones, a better display, and custom watercooling.

I use a Dell S27G whatever 1440p TN 144hz and its SO much better than 1080p. Def get that. Better headphones by Sennheiser or AKG and an amp are a must, and watercooling for the extra flair of color and class.

Okay,
First of all it feels like you are confusing getting better HARDWARE with having a better EXPERIENCE. You have a great system now so I'm not clear what you feel is missing.

(though my eyes glazed over trying to read everything)

Perhaps you are not tweaking the games properly. Certainly running 144Hz is problematic. You should NOT use VSYNC unless you can maintain 144FPS. That leaves you TWO main options:

#1 force ADAPTIVE VSYNC (Half Refresh) per game
- this will cap to 72FPS (VSYNC so no screen tearing)
- tweak so you maintain 72FPS 90% or more of the time (if you drop below 72FPS you get screen tearing)

#2 VSYNC OFF
- no specific FPS cap to maintain (higher is better for faster games) though the FPS will affect how obvious the SCREEN TEARING is. Sometimes on 144Hz it's minor.
- this produces the least LAG (slugishness) so it may be ideal for you with most games, especially faster ones. Personally for slower games I'd go with the Adaptive method to avoid screen tear completely

OTHER:
My two main suggestions for an upgrade path are:
a) buy a GSYNC monitor (2560x1440, 144Hz+, IPS, 27" or similar), and
b) keep the GTX1080 for several years.

The GSYNC monitor is more important than upgrading the graphics card. GSYNC, high-refresh means hitting a specific FPS cap isn't a big deal since there's no screen tear, no added stutter.

For example, if a game comes out that ULTRA drops you to 30FPS then just drop some settings to get 50FPS or so because chances are you'll get MOST of the visual quality still.

**There's not much difference between HIGH and ULTRA in most modern games despite the huge cost in FPS.

Thank you! Spelling was a little rough but glad you enjoyed it. you are right with all 3 suggestions. I will get a 27" IPS display next time around. something like the ASUS Rog Swift PG279Q or the Predator XB272.

just upgraded to those logitech L933s big step up from that turtle beach stereo headsett i was using. never getting TB again. so little sound for 200usd is laughable. i will do a full watercooled build some day. just not on this build. when that day comes, we are speaking a custom caselabs case and high end blocks etc etc.

hehe. i have loads with pics. was not 100% sure how to upload them here and i am at work so that had to wait anyway :)

thank you for the links sir! i will check those out!

can always get better. like the CPU. that I5 is getting smashed at high fps games like BF1 for example. but not changing that out before the 9gen ICE LAKE series arrive. at least not for another year. those 6 cores will help a lot. and by then games would be more demanding anyway so.

tweaking is not that much an issue. I got decent fps before. and now with a 1080 things will be much easier.

your other info. i will put that to the test!

not doing 2560x1440 with a 1080. I dont have a good experience with fps lower then at least 90. when I jump to 2560 it will be with a panel like the Acer 28" Predator XB281HK or the Asus 27" Rog Swift PG279Q.

Gsynk is amazing. but I dropped that for 1080p since its easier to maintain then on highter res. I do not have unlimited with funds so i had to prioritize.

yeah i know. that is why i always tweak for that specific game. going for what gives me the most in return.

forgot the steam part. was meaning to follow up on that. got 65+ games and some more on battle.net and origin.
i am also using 3 monitors today. one main. second for multitasking. third for system and performance stuff. using a whole dinner table. i think my next upgrade actually will be a better chair. using one from IKEA atm. not the best of bests.

Well that sounds amazing. But...don't forget to unplug every once in a while, for your own good. All that isn't worth much when you curdle into a virtual and practical raisin in your seat 😛

hahaha, I am good sir. actually i`ve been so hammered with real life, that i have only done like 10 min of game testing. and run 2x benchmarks on that 1080. just started ocing the card.

also i am an active Thai-Boxer when I am not plugged into the matrix, so i should be ok. :pt1cable:
