How is this "Crossfire Certified" ?!

Hello,

I need new PSU for HD2900XT Crossifre and the OCZ Silencer Quad 750Watt came very highly recommended from almost anyone I asked and it also got the "Crossfire Certified" stamp and is mentioned on ATI's supported PSU page.

The PSU uses a single 12Volt rail with 60Amps on it (dunno exactly what it all means but maybe you do :lol: )

Now what I dont get is that here :

it says HD2900XT Crossfired takes 581 Watt at Full Load (at stock speeds; not oc-ed). Add to that like 200 Watt for an OC-ed Quad Core CPU

(just pick QX6850 here http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp and OC it to 3500mhz with 1.4Vcore, resulting in estimated 195 Watts)

and you're already hitting 780 Watts, way above the 750 Watt so called "Crossfire Certified" PSU, not even taking into account the rest of the system (mobo, hdd, etc.).

Can somebody please elaborate on this ? I fully agree the 750Watt Silencer Quad is a super PSU, but based on above findings I have serious doubts it will suit my rig. Please prove me wrong because it has good price/quality ratio

I sincerely doubt that when they certify a PSU, they won't have an OCed CPU.

Actually what is said was that the WHOLE SYSTEM drew 581 watts.

Anyways, you made my day. I was already almost buying the Thermaltake ThoughPower 1200 Watts so I would never have to worry about watts and amps anymore for the foreseeable future

But guess I'm now going for the 100,- cheaper OCZ Silencer Quad 750W

You're sure right ? so I can OC the hell out of the Quadcore and OC the hell out of 2 2900XT's and the Silencer would be like "hey dude, is that all you've got ?!"

By the way system will be pretty basic : Q6600, Ultra 120 Extreme + Silenx Extrema 120mm, 2x 2x1GB PC6400, Maximus Formula, 2x2900xt or 2x 3870, Silencer Quad, CM690 with 3 casefans, 1x DVD-RW, 1x 500GB Samsung HDD, Vista 64

So no 5 HDD's or anything like that drawing extra juice

Good one ! interesting read !

read a review there on the Thermaltake Thoughpower 1200; again highly recommended. It may be pretty expensive (250 Euros) but then again you're ready for a looooong time and can upgrade to whatever you like.

Really doubting 750W Silencer Quad, top PSU, 150,- Euro, or the Thoughpower 1200W, also really good, 250,-.

Think I will spent the extra 100,- and go future-proof with the latter

about that psu... it has quite a bit of juice... i suggest, you probably wont ever need to upgrade it, ever... i ahve a feeling i could switch to the worlds most powerhungry system and this could still power it...i think if i got a new computer, i'd just run 2 computers off the ones psu... lol anyway, the OCZ750 is great, but if you think the extra 100 is worth it, i say go for it.
