Question How long should an Xbox controller for windows last?

It really depends on the user. I have one that has lasted for a few years now but I'm also not a daily player like my kids are.

If you aren't very destructive, etc. then it could last a good bit.

Also it being a genuine Microsoft branded OEM controller and not a 3rd party knock-off should be considered too.

Assuming you're talking about the official Microsoft controller (otherwise it's impossible to answer), I've always found Microsoft hardware to be exceptionally good quality. I've still got a Sidewinder gamepad and Sidewinder Precision Pro joystick that work perfectly well after a couple of decades! An old Logitech force-feedback wheel on the other hand gave up the ghost during that time.

I've currently been using an XBox 360 wired controller for nine years, not quite daily but 5 - 15 hours a week, and only very lately has it maybe shown a fault where it's disconnecting/reconnecting due to cable weakness at the controller. But it's only happened a few times, and it might actually just be an issue with the current game I'm playing. I shove sticks and mash buttons and stick it in a drawer when I'm done but don't otherwise abuse it. I'd certainly buy Microsoft again when I finally need or want to replace it.

Thanks to all. I usually buy the cheapest controllers, but I have switched to PowerA controllers made in the USA. They are around $25.00 dollars and seem to last. I've not had luck with the Microsoft ones. Although, I had an Xbox 360 that lasted awhile.

PowerA is a good brand. It's who I use for my Switch controllers but be mindful of the recent announcement by Microsoft that using 3rd party controllers and accessories with their consoles will soon be a thing of the past. Check out the article below:

I used to have the PlayStation controllers last a LONG time after the console itself had long been dead. I had a pair of them here until some months back that had to be as old as release for those type of Dual Shock controllers. One of them got a lazy joystick on one side but the battery in it was still good. I kept those around and used them with the PC for years until I finally got tired of the bugginess associated with the "translation" emulator that made the computer think it was an Xbox controller.

One of the two of those (Xbox) controllers I use now is the older style, I think it's older than One, but not certain. It was used when I got it from a friend and have had it for years now, still going strong. I actually prefer it because it pairs readily with the PC built in Bluetooth without having to buy the dongle accy like with the newer ones.
