Is there a way to make the Start button less wide?

I have seen information on how to change the text on the Start button
but I want to actually change the whole button to make it less wide.

Crack the XP code, and load your own image.

I've no idea how to do it, but a number of themes I've tried use a smaller
button, and there's software available to make your own themes...

Rotate the Taskbar up to the left or right sides or the desktop.

How would that make the Start button less wide?

You haven't tried it, have you?

I have tried it on XP Pro SP1, Classic Theme, Classic Start Menu.
My [Start] button is exactly the same width when the Taskbar is
either horizontal or vertical.

Only if you let it be the same width. You can have it only as wide as
the flag, if you want.

Try dragging the edge to make it more narrow when it's vertical.
