How many peeps care about power consuption?

Well I think that most reasonable people are at least aware of their energy use, if nothing else due to the rising costs. Someone hit the nail on the head earlier saying that we will care when it hits us in the wallet, few of us are actually concerned about the environmental impact. Now Im also gonna say that global warming is real, but we didnt do it. Remember the dinosaurs? Remember the climate back then? This is the way Earth is suppose to be, shes just been stuck in a cold snap for the last 100,000 years.

Back to OT, I do care because I dont like paying for extra electricity, but realistically I dont let it affect my choice in PC components. I use my PC to game, if it wont do that, it kinda defeats the purpose of having it.

This thread is a horrible parody of a talk show complete with gay guests and a naive backwater beauty queen host spouting shallow topics like starvation in africa and anti-aids campaigns. What happened here? What is this thread, this abomniation, doing in the CPU section?

And just like a tragic and bloody accident or some beauty surgery gone really wrong, it's so horrible and monstrous i can't stop myself from looking at it. :cry:

First off, I was teasing you, second who mentioned adultery, quit being so EMO and lighten up.

P.S. some of the nuances of funning people are obviously lost over the internet.

Since better is again arbitrary, that depends on your own personal point of view. Really, you draw the line at killing plants so you can live, while some others draw the line above that with full on 58 inch plasma tv's and suv's , that is my exact point. The line is arbitrary.

I care about efficiency, but I also like my hot showers thank you. You can only rail against something like energy usage so hard while you enjoy it's benefits. Should we be efficient sure, should we used older stuff or not advance for the sake of it, I personally think no.

Just so you know plant's don't have feelings, so you can't hurt them.

 


It actually started in response to the tom's article on the main page today trying to cover [strike]spin[/strike] the fact that Phenoms don't suck...(er I mean EFFICIENCY, yeah that's the ticket !)

Your right but like anything else, if nothing changes, nothing changes. Like womens rights, equality, etc etc. We might get to a point where using something that is wastefull of energy is taboo, but it has to start somewhere and that somewhere is here, in our everyday lives and in our forums.
 
Yes, I obviously want an efficient PC, but I would not trade in performance unless it was say, a 2 to 1 ratio, for example 10 percent performance uses 20 percent more energy.

OCing seems dumb to ME, instead of just buying a better binned chip and not needing to OC; but some ppl like speed for speed's sake and won't save energy until it costs them an arm and a leg to run their uber pc.
 
Phenoms aren't all bad, they cover the lower end spectrum of the quad/tri-core CPU market however inefficient they may be. Come on AMD don't fail me! I need something of yours to beat Intel (namely power consumption) on something that I'm interested in...

Well..it DID kick ASS in the Cinebench 10 benchmark...overclocked of course :)
 
I think that everybody should care about over consumption. Getting a wonderful and powerful PC and having fun with it is OK. Having an energy efficient PC and having it running idle for nothing is bad. Using standby mode or hibernate help this matter. It is not how much energy you are using, but how much is wasted. Most country don't have clean power plant. Coal plant or nuclear plant does create waste. Waste that we are breathing or get stored somewhere where it may become problem in some hundred years from now.

You cannot live in a modern, industrial society on just solar and wind power. Solar and wind power generation and those efficient low power devices you mentioned are all products of a modern, high tech industrial society. So is the modern medical care that most of us take for granted. And that requires high energy density carbon (oil, coal, or natural gas), nuclear, or hydroelectric energy sources. And we in the U.S. have just about maxed out our hydro sources.

And hydrogen: :lol: Where do you think we get hydrogen? 😱 You don't mine it, grow it, or brew it. You get hydrogen by electrolyzing water with electricity. Where does that electricity come from? And it takes as much electricity to produce hydrogen as you will get when you use the hydrogen as a fuel. (Well, OK. Catalytics show some progress at increasing the efficiency of the process.) Storage and distibution are also problems. But once it is produced, it is a clean fuel.

Windmills are very hard on birds, but that could be a benefit ... Put catcher nets at the bases of windmills for the "wind kill". Cheap source of protein.

Oh, I almost forgot. Do I worry about a Few watts of CPU energy consumption? No. I save more energy by being consciencious about turning off unneeded lights and taking short showers.
 


The problem with the logic of, it's not that good, or it's expensive so it's not worth it (solar or wind or hamsters), is that the technology will never get advanced to where it is good then. I think we need as much alternative energy as possible so as to just work out the kinks and GET it up there.

 
I care about the enviroment, so when I buy most of my stuff I see they offer what I'm looking for causing the least pollution, for my PC I set myself a price range, then a target performance and get the most efficient parts I can find.
I help the enviroment AND save money, it's a Win-Win situation.
 
Many people have reached the same conclusion as you, they are called minimalists. They only get what they really need, a good example is the Amish people, who have survived with their own products and little outside influence. They are very close to each other because of this and shun many outsiders. You don't have to be like that tho...

What has the world become? A place ruled by big companies. Eventually all the companies will eat each other up and bribe politics so much they allow a monopoly. Then it would be slavery to no avail. All good freedom can be corrupted unless held by one who's moral belief is for the greater good. That will be humanities darkest hour. Hopefully it won't end up like the Americian Revolution, with many people dead, as death is a terrible thing so deeply resented.

The world is mainly run on money. There are exception tho...

The Amish are a disgraceful people. I live in Lancaster PA around the bunch of them. The have no real care about their children. They'll send their 3 year old to bring cows in for milking and get trampled. What do they say? We can make another one.

They lack respect for their own beliefs. Beliefs of no modern convinces. Such as engines, electronics, electricity, vehicles, and so forth. Many have their own cars, vans, or trucks. They all use weed whackers, tractors, and many have their own cars. No I am not getting then confused with Mennonites. Many have big screen HDTV's, computers, modern luxuries, electricity.

This group of people hid behind their false religion to avoid the government, taxes, the draft (if it comes back around), and the ability to vote. Thank god the government is getting smart and forcing them to pay taxes (income, land, road taxes... they are the ones who destroy them, and other taxes) and recognizing them as citizens.


Sorry, nothing against you. I just don't like the Amish.
 
I care about power. If im indecised between to "similar" products i look to the power they use to make a choice. Its not a primary caracteristic, but its in there aswell. This ofc in the home user market.

In a company that needs to have 200 or more equipments, well trust me this is a decision maker. 1 PC doesnt make much diference, but in many companies there are over 200 (i know a office/factory that has over 500 terminals) trust me, its a decision maker. This in the Enterprise/Corporate market.

Same with cars mates. Although i drive my Lancia hat has a beautiful sound, a excelent Torque, a very good HP/weight ratio, and a hell of a acceleration, if i drive it, in a "sports" fashion, his averages will go way above 14L/100km.
It is a excelent car, turning vintage car in 2 or 3 years, but can you IMAGINE a pizza delivery guy doing its work with MY car ??? Or anything else ofc.

So

Gaming RIG = Performance
Working RIG = (TCO, Total Cost Of ownership)

Are you all telling me that I should shut down that old P4 1.6Ghz running Progress Quest and torrents 24/7 ?

Ok then just one more level, just one more little level 😛
 
And here we are talking about saving a few dollars a year on PC efficiency when we could sort the problem at the sources, better more efficient power plants and cars, bus and those hug SUV/'Trucks'. We fight over cents and ignore the dollars.
 


My car (when I had one) used to be driven ten to fifteen minutes a day; my PC is often on 24 hours a day. You're probably talking around 10kW for the car engine vs 300W for the PC (or 200-ish when idle), but the difference in usage time certainly helps make up much of the difference.

And if you have a thousand PCs in a 24/7 server farm with air conditioning... that's a lot of power.

Sorry but where I live walking everywhere every day means guaranteed skin cancer. Trust me my Grandfather got it on his head when he live here from being in the sun without a hat all day. And they don't make a SPF high enough for our 110+ dry heat summers. So I shall stick with my car for that.

Power consumotion doesn't matter to me if it hinders performance. But if I can save power and get performance as well as save power I am fine with that.

And sorry to say it but I can't not eat meat. I love my chicken and pork and beef. I like my veggies and fruits too but tofu makes me sick. Can't drink soy milk need the real stuff.

Talk about polution, cows contribute the largest amount of methane to the atmosphere...we so need to do something as that helps cause the "Global Warming" or as I like to call it "The Earths natural cycle of warming up and then cooling down". Darn cows and their methane.....
 
I spend ~$250-~$600/month on electricity depending on the season. Another couple of bucks for better performance won't hurt.
 
Not too much, mainly performance. We can all preach, I think I do my bit and I try to help charity where I can, I use public transport, a lot of walking, I keep my body exceptionally fit (I never want to be a burden to society since living in England things are provided for me through tax), use energy efficient stuff like light bulbs, go around turning off equipment when people leave it on in the house and I don't leave my stuff on standby or hibernation. Also, I have never been on a plane.

That said everybody in this conversation is using up power to talk and discuss with a lot of people who we (probably) have never met, so although spreading a message can help reduce pollution I still believe it would take quite a bit of hypocritisism to go on your computer and connect to a server and moan at people for wasting power.

If given the choice between two items that are very similar in price and different power consumptions, with no performance difference (or very little) then I'd certainly take the more efficient one. But I guess that's my choice.
