How much Memory???

I've been thinking about a new system and playing around on Dells website building different ones. When I come to the 'Memory option', the base is 4GB, 6GB, 8GB, etc. A a general guide when do you start looking at needing 6GB, 8GB or higher RAM?

4GB is still the sweet spot for gaming but with DDR3 so cheap right now many ( myself included) are going with 8GB. That would be 6GB or 12GB in a LGA 1366 triple channel setup.
