Once in a month ? Maybe once in a week ?

How often you guys shut down yours pc ?

Honestly it's up to you. I shut down when I'm gone for an extended period like going out of town, otherwise it's usually running most days and night in the month. Here's a link that brings up a few points about wear and tear and a PCs impact on your power bill: http://www.computertips.com/computertips/how-often-should-i-shut-down-my-computer/

Mine I only shut down once in awhile when required for an update or program install. Otherwise I set the monitors to sleep after a few minutes, hdd activity to sleep after around 30m-1hr. Basically a few low power states after a period of inactivity. Realtemp says I've had it open and running for a little over 2wks nonstop. My pc's get used often though, it depends on usage I think.

I used to be a 'leave it on 24/7 guy' until I found the miracle that is the ssd, boot used to annoy me but with ssd and windows10 its 6 seconds or so to desktop on my rig so I now turn off every night, modern internet means no more overnight steam downloads either.

Powering off certainly saves some electricity, if you leave the system in standby there isn't much wear and tear on the components. If you remove power from the system you are dealing with inrush currents and the like. Though I haven't seen that as a problem in years (and usually with ancient servers)

With Windows 8.1 and up restarting is actually the wise thing to do. Unless you have disabled Hybrid shutdown it is more like a hibernation anyway.

Pretty much shut down the gaming PC when not in use. I have another machine that stays on pretty much 24/7 as a media PC. Reboot for Windows updates. So basically monthly the computer gets to do its maintenance.

I'm the one who decides when people get precious updates at my shop. Windows XP SP1 forever!! bwahahaha.

I turn my laptop on/off much like I lock/unlock my front door: When I'm home=ON, when I'm out=OFF and when I'm in bed=OFF.

Nowadays, between very decent laptops/desktops with SSDs selling for $1,500 and 10 Mbit broadband available at affordable prices, it's more a question of idiosyncracies rather than any objective, technical consideration.

What a time to be alive...

I'll turn mine off every night, unless I'm watching a twitch stream. However, this isn't for any real concern over my CPU, but just because it can light my room up pretty bright when my lights are turned off, even though I disconnected the Front Panel LED's.

The only issues running most newer computers is potentially stability issues from the operating system, but newer operating systems tend to be good in the regard. The other power be power consumption, but the newest hardware typically also has very advanced power save features that make it not really a big deal.

There is no real longevity issue on keeping it running 24/7 unless it is overheating or something. If anything, I believe it is better for it to be constantly running than turning on and off very often, something about draining the power out of components completely then loading them again on startup putting slightly more wear on the electrical components. But I'm no electrical engineer. I ran a 2008 machine 24/7 for 4 years before replacing it, and I ran that thing hard, 8+ work hours a day, minimal restarts, never sat offline for more than a few minutes. And it still runs fine except the case wore out, the power button failed, so I stick my finger on the power pins on the mobo to turn it on now. Also a ball bearing is failing on the cpu fan...lol. But run it for 20 minutes and the ball bearing stops making noise.

I can't help but think of American Dad when the kids are reading the announcements, "I get to decide where French class is held!" kind of thing. Well the setup we have restarts the computers over the weekend along with any sort of updates that need to go out. The most annoying thing is trying to install a one-off software first thing Monday morning remotely only to find they shut down.

Changed my mind, you will NOT have your stuff up and running Monday morning, in fact, I think I'll downgrade you overnight!!!
