How this for a noob

P4 2.4 Northwood 250x12 @ 3GHz
1GB dual channel (512x2) Corsair XMS DDR3200 @ 200MHz 2-3-2-6
GF 5900 Ultra oc'd to 475/950

All running stable, no overheating -- CPU idles at 49c and under load 55c.

With my Asus P4P800 Deluxe MB I just tuned the FSB and set the memory for 320mhz and left everything else on auto... except the memory timings which I entered manually.

How'd I do? My first OC.

Being the noob that I am, I have no idea what the voltage is supposed to be set for by default, or for overclocking, so I left the voltage on "Auto" (for memory too). Seems to have done the trick though. I welcome any pointers as far as that goes. I don't think my memory can handle much more than 200MHz as I was unable to post when increasing FSB more than 10% at 1:1. At 250FSB and 5:4 the memory is back up to 200MHz stable. I am not sure what the voltage is supposed to be for the memory either so I left that on auto too. Its Corsair XMS 3200 pro memory (2x512) 2-3-2-6 (the fancy one with the thick black casing and LED's). At stock speeds, the SPD picks up the timings correctly but when I started to raise FSB the timing went up to 2-4-4-8 so I manually trimmed them back down to 2-3-2-6.

Any tips on how I can push this even more? My big case has 7 fans is a bit loud but seems to be doing a nice job at keeping everything cool. I'd love to be able to get 3.2 out of this thing.

Unfortunately, it's not accomplishing exactly what I planned. I figured if I pumped up the CPU speed maybe my games would run better. At first it seemed like it was working as planned but my 3DMark05 score didn't increase much (maybe by one point) after all was said and done.
 
3D mark05 is very graphics intensive, and since it has no physics or AI routines it is not really going to need your CPU very much. In real games the frame rates should be slightly better though.

If you want better 3D mark scores you will have to overclock your graphics card.
 
you should try 3dmark01, it relies on the overall system and not just on the gpu like 03 and 05

aquamark3 is a nice and fast benchmark too

Talk to me about voltage. When I run the Asus Probe on my P4P800 Deluxe I get VCore variable between 1.584 and 1.6. Also what should my AGP voltage be? It is set for a fixed 1.5.

try running loose timings on your ram, or change your divider, and a cpu vcore of 1.65v, you should be able to go 267mhz fsb, if not like the few lucky ones that get to 300mhz 😉

oh.. Asus is known for overvolting, so keep monitoring those temps and voltreads.

1.6v is as high as you would normally want it. it shouldn't cause any problems.

I believe that the pentium4C default voltage is 1.525v (This might have been raised to 1.55 for CPU's over 3Ghz). What is you Vcore set to in BIOS? You shouldnt really go above 1.65v on air cooling with the P4's.
 
Actually I dont think you have to increase the voltage for the northwood
I overclocked a friends system from a 2.4 to a 3.2 With no core increase

You dont HAVE to increase the voltage of any processor when you overclock. However not increasing the voltage could limit the ammount you can overclock (depending on what CPU you have).
The later 2.4's could get to 3Ghz+ without a voltage increase because intels northwood manufacturing process is very mature now. Meaning all the CPU's are very good.

I think if you want to overclock much over 3.2 a voltage increase will be required though.
 
Not a bad first stab at it. If you havent raised the Vcore then you may get even more out the CPU like 3.2. Just gotta watch the load temp to make sure it does not exceed 60c.

GF 5900 Ultra oc'd to 475/950 This could be higher if you want to do thing that will viod the warranty. Could flash the BIOS to the 5950 and get 500/1000 but that is another thing that require the proper testing and researching.

i'd guess around 4800-5100 3dm03 and 14000-15000 3dm01 and 32000-34000 aq3m, but I could be way off.. what do you get actually? it might be easier to judge that way around 😉

In Aquamark I am hitting around 32000 and in 3DMark 05 im hitting 1552. Thats the 05 version, I dont know what kind of difference that there is between it and 03. I could download and test the other.
 
your aquamark score seems about right. using 3dmark05 in your rig is pretty pointless, since all your small tweaks and fiddles won't show. Get 3dmark03 og 3dmark01 as well.

aquamark is pretty overall, but still relies a lot on the GPU

03/05 is close to purely GPU; the differece is that 03 was released in 2002 and uses dx9 and 05 was released in 2004 and uses dx9c. Cards are way faster now, so using very new benchmarks on older hardware is just dissappointing.

3dmark01 relies on the overall system (eg. ram, cpu, gpu) and resembles a somewhat closer gameexperience, just as aquamark3

when i finally got a descent 03 score, 05 ruined it all with it's f!"%¤" slideshow :O

get the progs and start your overclocking hell 😉

No i wasnt using the stock cooler
I was using a jalman 7000 series (the all copper one)
I got it up to 3.35 after that you have to increase the voltage
In my case at least
