I've searched all over the specs for my model and can't find the limit. My plan was to buy one of those docks with 2/3 hdmi outputs that has pass through capability to connect to the USB-C input, but have been told it also depends on the chromebooks processing ability and it might only allow for 1/2 at a push rather than having 3.

Is there anyway to know before purchasing the dock.

Chromebook is - Asus CB3400fm

Docks are more like virtual display adapters. Each one relies on your CPU and system memory for a video buffer. So the more screens you add the less resources you will have.

That model appears to have two Type-C ports with DisplayPort. So conceivably two monitors could be connected, no idea if that display output is limited to one connection. That would run directly off the iGPU, but still use system memory.

So I would say a lot depends on how much RAM you have. The processor should be sufficient to handle two monitors even if it is the i3 version. But only for basic display.

Just back with a quick update, grabbed my brothers dock and it has pass through technology so this freed up one of the two usb-c ports on the laptop as one had been getting used to power the laptop.

So as it stands, One usb-c on the laptop is in use with the pass through dock connected to it, this dock has one hdmi output which i've hooked up to external monitor 1 of 3 and it works, I've then used the second usb-c on the chromebook and connected it to external monitor 2 of 3 and it works.

Making it 2 external monitors and the chromebook screen itself.

That leaves 1 more external monitor to hook up, but unfortunately no more usb-c's available and only 1 hdmi was available on his dock... So i'm now left with do I roll the dice and buy a dock with two hdmi outputs in the hope for getting a third monitor working ? or buy a 1 hdmi output which is cheaper.
