How to clean up your journal

Someone on this group (I don't remember who it was) recently asked
if there is a possibiliy to remove quests from the journal that the
game doesn't recognize as completed though they are. Well, I have
immersed myself into the Construction Set a bit and have come to
this conclusion:
Yes, every quest can be removed from the journal manually.

How to do it:

1. Open the Construction Set and select File->Data Files...
2. Double click on every file needed for the quest you want to remove.
If you are playing plain Morrowind, this is only morrowind.esm
For Tribunal quests activate tribunal.esm as well.
For Bloodmoon ... (You get the point)
When you have selected all necessary files, click "OK". You don't
need an active file, so ignore the error message. You may also
ignore every inconsistency that may seem to be existent between
Morrowind and Tribunal or Bloodmoon.
3. Find out who gave you the quest. Look that NPC up in the Object
window under the "NPC" tab. Double click on that NPC to bring up
his/her definition window. Some NPCs may be blocked for changes.
Just remove the selector on "Blocked" and click on "Save". Don't
worry, we are not going to apply any permanent changes, so feel
free to do whatever you want. If you had to unblock the NPC,
double click on him/her again. Now the NPC definition window
should be fully accessible. click on "Dialogue" in the lower left
corner of that window. This may take some time, but eventually the
dialog window will show up.
4. Look under the "topic" tab for a topic related to your quest. Most
of all times this will be something like "jobs" for Thieves Guild
Quests or "duties" for Temple Quests. Click on that topic. You will
notice that the contents of the "Info / Response" section change as
you change topics. Look within the "Info / Response" section for the
quest you want to finish.
5. What is interesting to you is the "Result" section at the bottom of
the Dialogue window. You should see some script commands and - more
important right now - something like "journal xxxxx yyy", where
xxxxx is something like a word and yyy is a number.
(If there is no "journal xxxxx yyy" under the topic you are looking
at, look for another topic that may be related to your quest. I will
give an example later on.)
6. Click on Journal Preview at the right side of the Dialogue Window.
This will bring up yet another window named "Journal Preview".
Under Topic choose what I called xxxxx in step 5. Then look through
all possibilities under "Index". Those are all journal entries
belonging to your quest. Look out for that one that concludes the
quest. Often that is index 100.
7. Take a pencil and a sheet of paper and write the following things down:
journal <the topic you wish to end> <the number which concludes the
quest>
8. Close the Construction Set without saving anything and start Morrowind.
9. Enter the Console by pressing ~ (^ on german keyboards) and type exactly
what you just wrote down on paper. Confirm that line by pressing the
Return key. You will get a "Your Journal has been updated" notification.
Exit the Console the same way you have entered it and look into your
journal. The quest you wanted to delete should be gone now.

Example: Removing the "Necromancer in Mawia" Quest

For some reason this quest was never properly closed for my character.
3. After completing steps 1 and 2 (only morrowind.esm is needed this time)
remember (or look it up in the journal before starting the Construction
Set) that the Temple Priest in Molag Mar gave you this quest.
He is named Tharer Rotheloth.
So switch to the "NPC" tab of the "Object Window". You can sort the
contents of that window by ID, Name or anything else. A good idea is to
sort it by name. Find Tharer Rotheloth and double click on him.
He is blocked for editing, so uncheck the marker on "Blocked" and click
on "Save". Double click on him again. Now you are able to change
anything
you want.
4. Click on "Dialogue" and wait a few seconds until that window shows up.
What you are looking for is a quest, and the Temple calls quests
"duties"
So look at the topic "duties". Well, bad luck this time. The only thing
related to this quest is "One duty of the Temple is to bring justice to
Necromancers wherever we may find them. We have heard of a Necromancer
known as Delvam Andarys."
So look at the other topics. You are supposed to kill a man called
Delvam Andarys, so look at that topic.
5. Under the topic "Delvam Andarys" you will find the entry
"Delvam Andarys is dead. You have done the Temple a great service.
When you are ready, I have more urgent duties for you."
This is obviously the conclusion of this quest. So look at the
"Result" section at the bottom of the "Dialogue" window.
Notice the line "Journal TT_Mawia 100".
6. This is the finishing journal entry for this quest. If you want you
can look it up as described above.
7. Write down on paper:
journal tt_mawia 100
8. Exit the Construction Set. You don't need it anymore and it is using up
system ressources.
9. Start Morrowind, load your savegame, press ~ to enter the console and
type
journal tt_mawia 100
followed by the Return key.
Exit the console. The quest is removed from your journal.

I hope I could help a bit

Wow, amazing post, and I tip my hat to you. Still, IMHO, it's more
trouble than it's worth.

That's true. I'm sorry, but as far as I know the x-box version
of Morrowind doesn't feature the console.
But if you can teach your x-box to accept mods, there is a
possibility that you can edit your journal. If x-box version
and pc version use the same scripting language and journal system,
you could create a mod which adds only one activator to the game.
This activator could perform some journal operations. You would
have to figure them out on a pc version, though...
