How to Connect a Sony Bravia HDTV to a PC, using an HDMI and DVI cable, and an audio cable. I can get a picture but no sound.

How do I Connect a Sony Bravia HDTV (KDL-32BX300) to an HP Touchsmart 9100, using an HDMI and DVI cable, and an audio cable to play things from the computer on the tv. I can get a picture but no sound on the tv. I think I have tried every combination but am not sure. The manuals are no help. I *have* gotten tv sound on the PC. But I want PC sound on the TV. Any guidance? Thanks!

All you need is an HDMI cable. It will transfer video and audio. Then, on the TV, switch the input to HDMI(whatever port you plugged it into) then you can see your computer there.

Also even after getting a picture via HDMI you sometimes need to go to the windows audio icon and select 'playback devices' and then set the TV as default playback device. But you should not need a separate cable for audio as most modern PCs output both audio and video over HDMI.

Well, as I said, it is HDMI and DVI. The computer does not have an HDMI port. The manual says I need an audio cable, but says to go to the other manual for more details, and neither says how to connect the audio cable.

Also, as I said, I can get a picture, and I can get sound from tv to computer. I can't get sound from computer to tv.

So what you are doing is using a DVI to HDMI converter or else a combination DVI/HDMI cable to take the DVI out from the computer to the TV? Correct? So now we need to know what sort of audio out connections are on the PC. once connected you may have to go into TV audio settings and force it to use the RCA inputs because it will be expecting sound through HDMI.

Yes, it is a combination DVI/HDMI cable to take the DVI out from the computer to the TV. The photo in the manual is just the basic red and white audio cable. There is a digital output port on the computer, though. There is also a DirecTV receiver.

The red and white on the TV are RCA jacks and a 3.5mm to RCA splitter cable as linked will get you good stereo sound. Just put the samall 3.5mm end into the 'audio out' on the computer and the other ends go into the red and white on the TV. If you have a fancy surround sound system then you could use the digital(spidf) out to get 5.1 sound. The Bravia may or may not automatically detect that you want sound input from the RCA jacks but you should be able to force it to use that in the TV settings. I'm not entirely sure how the TV will react to sound coming from a different source than video to be honest.

OK, I see the Bravia is 720p only. This means that you can use 'component' cables as a surefire way to do what you want and not lose any video quality in the process. That's what the red, green and blue inputs are on the back of the TV. The audio inputs are right next to them and will be automatically detected. You will still need the same audio cable. Thanks.. I appreciate your time. So the first two red and whites next to the red green and blue. I have tried that. I have tried with the screens duplicated and with the screens extended.

I wonder if there is something in the computer that I need to change and I just can't find it. As I said, I got sound from the tv to the computer. I can't get the reverse. The instruction manual is rubbish.

Did you go into the Bravia audio settings and try to force it to use the red and white(RCA)?

On the PC side the audio output should by default be the 'audio out' jack so I don't think you should need to change anything in Windows. It's the TV which is not listening to the right inputs.

Your TV doesn't allow selection of audio input source independently from your video input source.

You need to use a DVI+Analog Audio input to HDMI output converter. HDMI uses all digital signals so the analog audio input needs to be converted into digital audio. The combined digital video and digital audio signals are then passed through a single HDMI cable to the TV.
