How to connect my ssd to the psu

I just bought a samsung ssd hd. I am trying to connect it to my pc. I would like to connect my old hd as well.

I am not sure how I would power the ssd - directly to the PSU or using a sata y splitter?

The problem with a sata y splitter is that the sata power cable from the old harddisk both goes to the psu (blue arrow on the screenshot) and to the motherboard (green arrow on the screenshot). As far as I can tell a sata y splitter only has a cable going to the psu and not to the motherboard.

Help is very much appreciated.

thanks for your reply. But this is not a ssd and also this still doesn't really answer my question regarding the sata power cable on my machine that goes to both the motherboard as well as the psu and how to replace that with a y splitter or something similar.

you cannot use splitter for hard drivers.

the connecting princeble for a ssd is the same as a hdd.

do you see that hdd at the bottom? 2 connectors are connected to it, you want to find another 2 of those to connect your ssd , thats all.
- the bottom connector to the hdd is a power pin, im sure youve got another 1 of those
- the top one is a sata connector, have you got another socket like that free on your motherboard?

I have bought the sata connector (same cable as the top one on the hd) and there is a free slot for it on the motherboard. The problem is the bottom power connector on the hd on the image - I have an extra one for the ssd harddisk but where would the other end go? directly to the PSU or ? If so then I would have to open up the PSU as it just has a bunch of cables coming out of it but none of them ends as anything unused.

yeah but as I said I don't know how to connect it to the PSU. I would have to open up the PSU as it just has a bunch of cables coming out of it but none of them ends as anything unused.

If you look at the image - the point where I have added a blue square around. I would need one more of these power plugs wouldn't I ? to connect the ssd sata power cable to the PSU ? but there is just this one - that the old hd is already using.

"thats fine connect them to 1 of them."

hmm. connect it to which one ? there is only one (the one with the blue square on the image) and the old hd is already using this one. There aren't any other coming out of the PSU similar to this one. That is why I am thinking of perhaps I could use some sort of splitter.

ok thanks. But how come that is not recommended. And also please explain - if I buy a splitter will the end of the sata power cable from the old hd go from the end on the blue rectangle into the splitter or do I only use the splitter cable and not my existing sata power cable (so that I will remove the sata power cable on the hd end (the yellow rectangle) and replace it with the splitter cable here? I guess what I am trying to ask is - where do I place the splitter cable - directly into the old hd or from the other end of its existing sata power cable?

Yes it is a prebuilt pc from Medion - I haven't found anything about upgrading the hdd in the manual. The power supply is this one: fsp350-40 mdn

Don't forget to buy an extra adapter from 24 pin to 16 pin or whatever the number of pins on your motherboard will need. Because a standard atx power supply comes with 24 pins but your motherboard has a different connection

Would just get a y splitter from one Molex power connector to one sata power and one Molex power connector, if available
