I apologize beforehand, I am functionally illiterate on computers, apparently.
I was recently given a Versa H21 computer by a dear friend. I didn't have a monitor so I purchased a U2410 Flat Panel Monitor, a power cable, and a DVI-D connector.
I have plugged these two cables in and the monitor doesn't have a connection to my computer.
What have I missed? It's probably something obvious.

does your computer have more dvi ports? maybe a separate graphics card you can connect to?

maybe the source of the monitor has to be changed to dvi

the versa h21 is only a case, the hardware inside would be interesting. open it up and have a look if you can see which motherboard and eventually graphics card is in there

Has your dear friend explained where to plug in the monitor?

You know what a DVI-D connector looks like because you purchased the cable to fit the new monitor.

Does the computer have the same port somewhere?

You mentioned HTMI - meaning HDMI - is the new monitor cable you purchased an HDMI on one end and DVI-D on the other?

Your monitor has from L-R Displayport, HDMI, two DVI-D ports, a VGA port, and even composite and component ports

None of us know what ports are on your computer. Note that not all ports on a computer may work as some may require a specific CPU in order to function.
