I there anyone here that wants to help me get the remote desktop working? The best microsoft tech support would do is tell me to use quick assist. That's not gonna work from another state with no one here to click "allow". Plus it was slow as hell. Gameplay was impossible. It'll work here locally from one computer to another but when I connect to an outside network, it won't connect. The guy did mention something about having to use a vpn. I know windows used to let you set up your own vpn. I don't know if it still does and the only videos I could find were using a third party vpn. Anyone up for this?

I don’t think you understand how Remote Desktop functions.

First of all, you have to enable it on the gaming computer to be able to connect to it from the remote location. To enable it, you have to toggle on the setting on the computer that you’ll be running games on. Note that you must have Windows 10/11 Pro to enable this feature.

To connect to RDP, you have to be on the same “network” essentially. Here are the options:
  1. A VPN server, running on the same network that your gaming system is on, will allow you to connect to the same network with your remote system. Configuring a VPN client on the gaming system will not allow you to remote into it from another network (unless you have a VPN software that allows you to setup a WAN like that).
  2. You can setup a RD gateway, but that requires a lot more setup (it’s typically done in corporate networks with servers and Active Directory) and I wouldn’t suggest it nowadays.
  3. The other option is port forwarding on the router which essentially forwards traffic from your routers public IP to the gaming system on the RDP port. This allows anyone to run a network scan and detect the RDP port is open, so they could theoretically try to get into your system. I’d not recommend this without some additional security measures.

Of course, there are third-party softwares available that may or may not be what you’re looking for. For instance, you can setup Steam on your gaming system and connect to it from another laptop, tablet or phone. I think you can connect to it remotely out of the box, but I haven’t tested fully… see below.

I was trying to do this the night before I left town. I messed around with a vpn for like 3 hours and finally went with parsec. It worked out ok enough. I'm back now and won't be needing it for a while. Next time I want to allow myself enough time because ultimately I want to set up 2 pcs for remote connection via my laptop. Right now I could access the files from one through the other one. The problem is parsec doesn't work with win7 so I need to get it running the hard way so I can control both. The win 7 one is what I use for dl video and I want to be able to do that and not just access what it already has. I thank you for the info. Any little bit helps.
