How can I ensure that only I have access (read, modify, etc.) to certain folders on an external HDD (intended for backups, but not physically secured in a safe) ?

Use backup software that can encrypt the backup image. But why is an external HDD more vulnerable than the internal storage on you PC/laptop ? IMO, it isn't. If somebody wants your private data, stealing the original is just as good as stealing the backup copy. How can I ensure that only I have access (read, modify, etc.) to certain folders on an external HDD (intended for backups, but not physically secured in a safe) ?
