How can I ensure that only I have access (read, modify, etc.) to certain folders on an external HDD (intended for backups, but not physically secured in a safe) ?

Can choose to hide the folder, but anyone smart enough to click a box can see them again. IIRC you can put "$" to either side of the file name and it hides as well.

Use backup software that can encrypt the backup image. But why is an external HDD more vulnerable than the internal storage on you PC/laptop ? IMO, it isn't. If somebody wants your private data, stealing the original is just as good as stealing the backup copy.

Since these are external drives using Bitlocker is a simple solution.
