How to install hp 4c scanner driver in windows 7

Header says it all--and yes I've searched here and despite similar (exact?) thread topics being closed as "solved" none of the "solutions" worked for me.

Windows 7 64bit, Adaptec 29160 SCSI card (which device manager does not recognize), scanner shows there as "HP C2520A SCSI Processor Device."

Tried VueScan and it claims no scanner is installed.

When I click on the scanner in device manager and try to install the drivers I got from HP (presumably for Windows 7 64bit) it says it can't find them.

When I try to install them manually by left clicking the .inf file, I get the ole "the inf file you selected does not support this method of installation."

On most forums the responses run the gamut of idiocy, commonest being "why don't you throw that elegant machine away and buy one of these late-model pieces of junk that are supported by windows 7."

This list seemed inhabited by more sensible folks so I'm hoping there's some knowledgeable scanjet 4c nut out there who's actually gotten it to work.

Looks like you did your homework to try to resolve the issue. My only suggestion at this point would be to try Vista drivers. And just as a side note, in the past, I experienced problems with HP scanning & CD/RW devices installation to newer OS. As with you, I tried everything with no success. Came to find out that the installation packages d/l from HP, even though they indicated were for the new OS, when I finally decided to edit them, were definitely for the previous OS. The devices are in the HP scrap yard ! Good luck.

I had an HP4C scanner that I had to pitch because of no Vista/Win7 drivers.

O god jsc, don't tell me that. My 4c has been a staple of this studio from way back in the miggy days (if anyone left on earth knows what a miggy is) and I'm jiggered if I'll give it up till they pry it from my cold etc.

Get better prints from a 100dpi scan off the 4c than from a 200dpi scan from a later-model (but still obsolete!) 4300c.


And hey ksiemb thanx for your note. HP is indeed doing a fan dance in its pretending to support these older models. Their own fault for making what truly is the best scanner I've ever used--but hey, it was back in the day when things weren't built to fall apart next week.

But even on this list there are folks who've gotten their 4c's to work in windows7, if only the 32bit version. Still no hits on any success with Ultimate 64bit.

You'll be pleased to know I looked around and realized there's an old workhorse box I use just for internet--must be at ten years, old running XP--and naturally the ole 4c works on it sweet as a peach.

Good Ole XP is right ! Glad you found a way to get it running again. And the equipment you refer to, as well as being reliable, as mine was, wasn't cheap to buy either, back in the day ! My "HP stuff" sat in the closet for well over a year, when I did a last ditch effort to get the drivers again, and upon failure, did the pitch. Beside pleading with the webmaster at HP to check the link for validity, even wrote the Prez of HP at the time (as they note on their site) you can do, but oh well, they must have been to busy to respond !

You remind me ksiemb, I paid $250 plus shipping for my 4c--and that was in 90's dollars!

This 4300c usb scanner I picked up a few years back for 18 bux; OfficeMax was pitching them out the door. Though it ain't a patch on the ole 4c it's still way better than anything new I've seen. Wife's got one of Canon's all-in-one machines--my god don't get me started.

But to keep it relevant, I still ain't given up trying to get this 4c to work in windows 7. Have read of folks force-feeding other drivers and making the machine recognize the scanner as something else--hell vueScan on the XP machine thinks the 4c is a 6100, so anything's possible.

Hello,
I found this thread looking for 64-bit drivers for a hp jetscan 4c. As i read one of the posters mentioned that the 4c is sometimes recognized as a hp 6100. So with that in mind I tried the following:

I installed an adaptec scsi card 19160 and installed the 'Ultra160 64-bit Driver v7.5.645.100 for Windows 7 & 2008R2' I also installed 'VueScan Pro 9.2.02' software which recognized my jetscan 4c as a 6100. The scanner now works on my Win7 64-bit system.

Hope this helps someone.
