How to make my new computer run good graphics wise in games

Ok so here is my problem i recently just built my own computer due to the fact that it was a little more cost effective for me and I really wanted to try my hand at building my own computer. A person i watch on youtube sometimes Austin Evans made a video on how to build your own computer so i followed this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfGE4i_A6E4) and built my own computer i got it running installed all of my games and got everything going, the benchmarks in the video he showed in the link above were all very high on high settings at 1080p in the 3 games he demoed all of which i have, i have tried them all on the computer and have not been able to get them to run as nicely they run ok when there is not much going on then when it gets a little graphics intensive framerates drop below 15 and the games become unplayable, i have tried Crysis 3, borderlands 2, Metro:Last Light, and the newest Tomb Raider all on very different settings from low, to high, in some cases the game becomes worse when i set the graphics to low I am not sure why
The specs for my computer are:
MB:MSI-A75MA-E35
Processor:AMD athlon x4 750k
RAM: 16 GB Corsair Vengeance Ram 2 8 gb sticks in dual channel memory
GPU: Gigabyte r9 270x factory overclocked GPU

I though previously that these would run so much better than they do currently, i am not sure if it was something i did or maybe i need to change some settings but i would really appreciate help with this question

Are your motherboard BIOS and graphic drivers updated?

My psu is a corsair vengeance 500w
And i am not sure how to upgrade the bios and mb drivers im pretty sure i updated my graphics card i did install all the disc drivers but im not sure where to find all the updates for the other two

Get the latest graphic drivers from AMD's website. The bios you can get from your board manufacturer's website

Look up some videos about how to flash a new bios.

Also, I got a gut feeling Austin probably overclocked his Athlon to get that performance. It is quite dated and is only a quad core. Look at this benchmark it shows you stand to gain from a better CPU. So overclocking should help greatly.

Ok so as far as the BIOS go my BIOS versions is 2.2 with the latest version being 2.3, that being said when i tried to download the latest version from the manufacturers website all i came up with was a 404. So i tried to maybe save link as... on the link to maybe get it from there, i got the file but it was stuck in a zipped file so i couldnt do anything with it, i updated my GPU drivers from AMD, Now my MSI board has this OC genie ll feature in it to overclock with just 1 click i was wondering if that is a viable option or if i am really going to overclock i should just do it manually, aslo my GPU came with a software to overclock it by just turning up dials on things like mhz and i have no idea whatsoever as how to use this correctly, i will try the BIOS system overclock through the OC genie ll and get back to you with that, in advance thank you for he help so far.

OK, so i went to the OC genie ll settings through the BIOS and overclocked it with 1 touch overclocking for the RAM and CPU, when i checked the speed it is at now, it changed from 3.4 ghz to 4.1 ghz, is that a good enough overclock? and also should i still overclock my graphics card and if I should than can yu recommend what I should change the numbers to, thank you

CPU overclock to 4.1Ghz is significant.

Use MSI Afterburner to overclock your GPU.

Basically crank up the core clock by 100Mhz until it gets too hot for you, or starts glitching/crashing in games. Then reduce by 50Mhz until the problems go away. Set power to +20%.

What are your temperatures for the CPU and GPU?
Overclocking should only be done if you monitor your temperatures carefully.
Did you assemble your pc correctly?
You need to use the correct amount of thermal paste and make sure that your heatsink is sitting very tight on your CPU.
Do you have the graphics card plugged in from the PSU?
