Generally, HP printer properties have another option under grayscale that says to use black only. Or on others you uncheck the high quality grayscale which then uses black only.

Are you using the basic HP driver, the full feature HP driver, or a Windows XP built-in driver?

i am on windows 7 and i downloaded the latest driver from hp

OK, why are you posting to a Windows XP group? 😉

Anyway, that is your problem; there is NOT a Windows 7 driver from HP, so you are using a generic Windows 7 driver.
