How to run Call of Duty on Windows 10

I have Call of Duty, COD 2, COD United Offensive and COD Modern Warfare 4. I have repeatedly attempted to set the compatibility mode in Windows 10, so I have resigned myself to using Steam. Sadly, Steam sometimes-not always-resets the display. My questions are, is there a way to run these games directly on Windows 10? Why is Steam being so erratic?

Also, today, when I attempted to reset the compatibility mode specifically for Steam, I had to download an older version of DirectX, but Windows 10 would not allow me to install it.
