How to save data from an EXTERNALLY connected Window 8 HD?

Situation: Win 8 Gateway with problems. Won't boot to User Acct Desktop. Black Screen after password entry.
1st Step: Attempt to save clients data by removing HD from laptop and connecting it to another Windows 8 computer to copy data files to HD in that computer.
Problem:
CAN NOT 'SEE' content on externally connected HD.
What to do..... ?

If you have a repair/installation disk (If not, use the other W8 machine to create one) then boot from it and try Safe Mode to retrieve data... also 'Refresh your PC' leaves Data intact....
(Navigate to Safe Mode via Troubleshoot and Advanced Options)
